Surprised by choice of Deborah

One of the mums at the school has just had a baby girl and called her Deborah! Her nickname is Bee as that's apparently its meaning. Are 70s names due a revival??

Her son is called A m o s (separated so not googlable!), which seems more cool and on trend.

Feels quite retro these days and the pulp connection is a good one. I think.
Much prefer Deborah to Debra though- yuk (sorry if anyone else has that name!)

Deborah is great. A bit more imaginative than the usual Lily, Molly, Milly, Ava, Evie, Ellie, Mia, Sophie hordes.

I think it's beautiful and goes really well with the other OT name. Bee is a cute, more 'on trend' nn anyway.

Deborah Vivien Cavendish the late duchess of Devonshire.
I think it's a lovely name.
Also a pulp fan and will be humming that song all day now. Also Slaves "Where's your car Debbie?" just popped into my head.

I know a few (non-Jewish background) toddlers now with Old Testament names like Rebecca, Ruth, Naomi, Esther, Hannah, Abigail - definitely coming back, though Hannah's been common for a while.

I don't like names beginning with D (mine does) so wouldn't choose Deborah myself but think Amos (which I really love) and Bee sound like a lovely sibling pair.
I know a Melanie, Jason and Ryan (siblings) which sounded dated to me initially but I can't imagine them with other names now.

When I had my son there was a baby Stephanie and Jason on the ward. I thought both were dated but what the heck. Beautiful babies.

Year 2000 is a perfect song. Probably why I love the name.
But ‘Song for Whoever’ is great as well.
Philippa and Jennifer are very lovely too.

I really like it. Ignore that ‘dated’ complaint - why would that matter?
I want two more babies named Gloria and Deborah, just because of this thread.

(Not going to happen. Maybe cats?)

I think it's awful. Dated. Common as muck in the 50s-70s.

It's nowhere near reaching its 100-year revival.

I think biblical names: Rachel, Leah, Jessica, Sarah, Susannah, Simon, Andrew, Paul, David, John will be the first 70s type names to be revived

Yes! I have a VERY common 70's name but I love it. Always loads in my class but no babies round this way called it. When you look at how it's spelt & say it it's really lovely. I can totes see why my folks picked it Smile

My immediate reaction was nooo but actually I do like Deb or Debs.

I think the mother is being a bit optimistic in thinking her nn will always be Bee. If she's Deborah at nursery or school I would imagine she will quickly become Deb or Debbie. But maybe the mother doesn't mind what she gets called at school.
