Arlo?

My husband likes Arlo for a boys name. I think I like it but it’s fairly unusual in comparison to the other names we are considering. What do you think of it? I think it’s a bit of a cartoon character name?!

I like the name but have seen it mentioned in the press etc as being typically 'hipster'. I think it was in a list alongside beards and mason jars. Shame as I would have considered it too!

It’s an ancient Saxon name meaning ‘fortified hill’ and was made famous in the seventies by Woodside Guthrie naming his son Arlo.

It is a lovely name but is so unbelievably popular. It honestly feels like everywhere I go I hear it called out to a little boy at least once

Try-hard and becoming too popular. Natasha Kaplinsky has an Arlo, I think - that would be more than enough for me.

IT's one of the fastest (if not THE fastest) growing boys names of the last few years. In 2006 it was the 582nd most used boys name in the UK. In 2016 it was 49th.

That means two things:

  1. It's not going to be unusual for this generation.
  2. It may well become dated in a few decades because it is obviously on trend for this period.

Point 2 is true for a lot of names though tbf. They're just not all as easy to predict.

I don’t think it’s unusual at all - it’s really popular near me. 2 of my colleagues (in a team of 30) have had babies called Arlo this year, and I’ve seen it on fb announcements a lot as well. It’s cute but I think will really date - a future Kevin/Gary/Wendy type name

I don't like it, but it's not offensive. It's similar to names like Rio and Otis.
