Hugo or Theodore (and why)?

Theodore as it simply allows more scope for nn in the future.
Teddy is very cute for a toddler or small child and very in a the moment. Theo I picture as a cool teenager and Theodore is very professional.

Oh sorry! Missed the (why) part!

Hugo because Theodore (though lovely) has been tainted for me by too many parents yelling “Fee-o! Fee-o-daw!” across the park where I live. It’s a lovely name, but doesn’t sound pretty in the local accents where I am (near London). I massacre some names in my accent too btw. Not picking on the accents so much as pointing out that some names don’t ‘work’ as well, to me, in some accents.

I had both of these as my choices for dc 2, although Theo rather than Theodore, but we had a girl. I knew a Hugo years ago and he was the sweetest little boy, I didn’t find it to be a terribly posh name.

I’m not so fussed on the full Theodore as I couldn’t stand it being shortened to Ted or Teddy.

The trouble with Hugo and "posh" generally is I can't imagine yelling across the car park at Morrison's without burning up. Dealing with a child's bad behavior is bad enough without knowing how much everyone is going to take the piss out of you behind your back.

The sweet spot for us was a name that goes over okay when wrestling a tantrum in the supermarket car park but in future years is not implausible for a bank manager or lawyer.

What does it matter if Hugo is posh?

30 years ago Olivia was posh now it’s everywhere.

Theodore.

Hugo makes me think of French Bulldogs. I can offer no logical reason for this, but it does.

I like Hugo best, cool and classy, also it's not as popular as Hugo so he won't be Hugo3.

I also like that it is a neat compact whole name, unlikely to be shortened for a nn, as Theodore usually is.

I love Both , I have a hugo, only ruled out Theo as we have a relative named it. I also felt hugo seemed a bit more Manly (imo), for when he was an adult :)

My Theodore is 4 and we’ve only met one other so not too popular.
His nickname is Figgy Pudding, though 😄

On the other hand I love Theodore shortened to Teddy.

When I was pregnant with my eldest child my DH kept jokingly suggesting the names Pauline or Hugo. Unsurprisingly I dislike the name Hugo (& Pauline). I have since met a couple of boys named Hugo & they are both delightful young men.

I adore the name Theodore but hear it's becoming increasingly popular? I've however not met one.

DS2 is Hugo, he is 9 weeks old and we love his name. We don't use any nicknames but that's fine with us.

His older brother is Giles.

I prefer Theodore because it's more versatile and less posh.

I knew a Hugo once and he was so... wispy. Put me off the name for life.

Hugo always seems to imply that DS is the latest in a long line of Hugo's!

Hugo is my number one name right now. I just think it has the right balance of cute but strong, it's really underused, and I think it stands the test of time. Theodore was also on my list, but my OH hates it, so I can't use it. I think Theodore is so lovely, I imagine a kind, gentle boy named Theodore. Also the nn 'Theo' is fantastic. So really I wouldn't say either name is better than the other, I think it'd depend on your surname and how the name flows.

Theodore is my favourite. Hugo is nice but I do think of it as very middle class

Theodore- but I'm biased :) we use Theo, lady down the road uses Ted
its a great name, DS also likes sometimes being called Theodore in formal circumstance says it feels grown up..he's 11
