Finn or Louis?

Baby boy is due in a week and a bit and we can’t decide between these two names.
Surname will be a long-ish double barrel (neither of us will back down on the surname) so I like that they’re both short names.
I feel like Finn is more cool, but quite popular whereas Louis is more classic. I’m genuinely afraid that we might have to flip a coin after he’s born!

How rude, Iamagreyhound. Everyone will have a different definition of what's 'cool' but some people on here obviously have a Finn in the family. And for what it's worth, yes - I think it is cool. So neh.

We have a Finn and I love the name. There are many Finlay and Finleys but not so many who are Finn.

Yes, Louis is originally a French name. But in many countries the pronunciation has adapted to the local language. In Germany, Austria etc Louis is always pronounced with an s. As is the US city of St Louis.

And I agree with the others - Louis is not pronounced as Lewis and it's a male name. Some people do say Lewis, but they are saying it wrongly.

I'm biased but i LOVE Louis. I think it's the perfect mix of classic but not dull and sounds good at all ages, including teenage. And it's definitely a different name to Lois Grin

Louis is NOT pronounced Lewis
NOR is it a girl's name.
It's a French boy's name people.

Finn is nice too. Love it with Fintan as the full name.

I know loads of Finns aged 5-15 and also think it’s past its popularity peak and may start to sound dated soon.

For clarity, to me Louis is pronounced Lou-ee, is not unisex, and is an entirely different name to both Lewis and Lois*

Exactly my thoughts.

I'm not mad keen on either, but would go for Louis out of the two. Finn is ok but I think it's a bit bland and boring, and I disagree with the suggestion that it won't date.

Both are lovely names and are relatively cvommon amongst my 16 year olds friends. Could they be passed their peak?

Finn is lovely. I have a Finlay - but often shortened to Fin as I imagine it will be the rest of his life (he's 14 months old). It was the only boys name we were absolutely 100% on and I still love it.

You may read Louis the French way, but many won’t. Just be prepared for Lou-is, that’s all.

I would also read Louis as Lou-ee. If you want Lou-is then I'd spell it Lewis.

Finn is very popular where I am (Scotland) although I would say more with the 7-15 age group - it seems to be dropping in popularity a bit in the last few years. Almost all the Finn's I know (in fact, all but two I can think of) are actually Finlay/Findlay but use Fin/Finn in normal day to day. I guess it gives them more options when they're older. (I also know A LOT of Finlay/Findlays who go by their full name - like I said - very popular up here)

I only know a couple of boys called Louis but know a ton called Lewis (ranging from late teens down to toddlers) - it's been popular in scotland for a long time and doesn't show much sign of waning.
