Hi, it seems to get bad press when you look it up the male form of Sharron (that's another thread entirely) for me it reminds me of Home Alone that's not a bad childhood memory. Your thoughts 💭...

Kevin's horrible.

Reminds me of Kevin Rudd and We Need to Talk About Kevin, neither of which are remotely positive associations.

Springbreeze · 15/11/2017 20:37

Indeed. When I hear snobbishness over Kevin, I can't help wondering whether it's anti-Irish prejudice. Just like Liam and Conor are often cited as 'naughty' names...

Kevin has a lovely sound. But then I also love Sharon as a sound and love the Joni Mitchell song. More interesting and substantial than Ella/Bella/Mia/Maya etc

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2017 19:33

It's a lovely name. It doesn't get the bad rep here in Ireland that it seems to get in England.

flowersWB · 15/11/2017 18:47

It's still okay in the North East. Kevin Keegan still retains legend status...

PuppyMonkey · 15/11/2017 18:41

Oddly enough, I really have got a cousin called Kevin just like in the song. He's a bit of a twat, but harmless enough.

I reckon it's only in the US that it's still a fairly normal name. Here in U.K it's just a very naff name.

My DP had an old works van that he used to call Keith. No idea why. Grin

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 15/11/2017 18:36

Kevin Bridges is ok

cinnamonwoman · 15/11/2017 18:32

My dad was telling me about how the name Kevin gets the least hits on a dating profile...he's single, and called Kevin Grin(he thought that was hilarious)
Apparently it's got a bad rep in France!

Joeybee · 14/11/2017 22:15

I really like the name Kevin. I know it's a bit dated, but I just think it has a nice ring to it. I'd totally use this as a middle name to honour an uncle, however my Husband hates the name.

MrsPringles · 14/11/2017 22:12

Haaaaa. I also think of the bird from up. And then ‘The Teenager’

euanthesheepiloveyou · 14/11/2017 20:17

I think of the bird from 'Up'.

Doh not a fan of name

Dreams16 · 14/11/2017 20:00

I’ve known two Kevin’s and both are absolute dicks horrible people so I’m out of the name

WeeBeasties · 14/11/2017 19:23

*sell. Grr.

WeeBeasties · 14/11/2017 19:20

Kevin is the name of a man who wants to see you some meat from the back of his van.

Kannet · 14/11/2017 19:18

A friend of mine from Africa believes it to be an unlucky name. I don’t see anything wrong with it but that has stuck in my mind

blackteasplease · 14/11/2017 19:10

We had an au pair called Kevin who is lovely. So now I think if the name fondly.

Atticusss · 14/11/2017 19:06

I like it. Also reminds me of Home Alone. I think it's cute. Probably depends on the age of someone how they take it.

ByThePowerOfRa · 14/11/2017 19:04

I knew a little Kevin when I lived in Edinburgh. He must be about 18 now. He was a nice boy but I’m not at all keen on the name tbh. It also reminds me of the Lionel Schriver book, “we need to talk about kevin”, which isn’t a nice association.

Sashkin · 14/11/2017 18:47

Roland Rat ruined it for me I’m afraid. If DS came home with a little friend called Kevin, I’d be mentally singing the Rat Rap behind his back. And to his face, if he was young enough for it to go over his head.

“Rat fans! Kev-iiin!”

No.

Kevin is a very ancient Irish name. To say it's a horrible name is a not like saying Mohammed is a ridiculous name. Would you say that?

Itsonkyme · 14/11/2017 18:39

Don't call baby Kevin! Terrible name and terrible idea.
Is this a joke?

Evelynismyspyname · 14/11/2017 18:37

Nothing wrong with old man names - it's not an old man name yet though. It's a middle aged name in the UK.

Names don't come back around until the previous generation they're associated with is over 80, possibly 90...

Abetes · 14/11/2017 18:37

I’m sure that there are lots of lovely people called Kevin but it really is the worst name.

Evelynismyspyname · 14/11/2017 18:35

I always hear my brother in law saying "Kevin's not a name, it's a diagnosis"

Horrible, but an indication of the stereotype associated with the name ...

AuntieStella · 14/11/2017 18:31

Kevin received universal approval on a thread when it was the proposed mane for a Shetland pony.

Who might have been in foal.

(Wonder what happened. Was there the patter of tiny hooves? If so, was the infant called Perry?)
