Me and DP have decided on the name Elizabeth for dd, its a family name and we would like to give her a nickname to make it more personal to her. I like Eliza and Libby, DP likes Elsie, any more ideas?

Lizzie is my favourite shortening!

But also love Elizabeth as it is. Tends to be used as a middle name in my family but more unusual as a first name these days. As DH cousin was Elizabeth, we felt we couldn't use it as first name but was tempted!

Za pronounced Zar

Bess. Love that name.

I knew an Elizabeth who got called Bunty. I never understand why but it suited her!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/11/2017 11:28

Ds2 would have been Elizabeth nn Libby and if it helps I haven't gone off it 19 years later, still love it. (Have gone off other two dses girls names)

Beth, but don't read Little Women...

DD15 has a friend who USED to be Libby, but now wants Elizabeth because it sounds more "grown-up"

Battyoldbat · 02/11/2017 11:14

I’m an Elizabeth who had never used a nickname...and yet everyone calls me Liz.
It’s just such a standard nickname, it can be hard to get anything else to stick. I don’t bother correcting people though because I can’t stand either name so it doesn’t really matter to me what I end up called!

My DD is Elizabeth and she is known as Beth (or Bethy Boo, or busy Beth, or Bethy boodle dandy doodle).

I love Lisa! We considered Ella/Ellie for a nn but decided it was far to close to my name. Beth and Betsy are also lovely.

My friend is called Elizabeth and goes by the nickname Lil.

Nicknames tend to evolve really.
Elizabeth is beautiful I would not shorten it personally

I'm an Elizabeth. Most will assume her nickname is Liz or Lizzy and will proceed to call her that.

Elsie is now accepted as a standalone name, so I don't think many people would be receptive to that as a shortening for Elizabeth. The same goes for Lily and Ella and other traditional shortenings of the name.

I love Eliza

I don't like nicknames that start with a different letter than the actual name but accept that this is personal.

I think using the full name Elizabeth will probably be more unusual than any nickname though. It is a lovely name.
