What are people’s thoughts on using the name Eddie as a first name and not shortened from Edward?

A family friend is called Edward and he absolutely HATES it if anyone calls him Eddie. Personally I prefer Eddie, especially on a baby/child, but perhaps you’d better put Edward on the birth certificate.

When I see Eddie I read Edie (short for Edith).
Assuming you don’t mind that confusion go ahead and give your child a diminutive as a name.

Love! And I love your calling him what you're going to call him if yswim! Drives me mad- "he's called Edward but his chosen name is Eddie" just call him bloody Eddie then!

I really like Eddie but I'd say it has to be short for Edward or Edmund.

I have an Eddie who is just Eddie on his birth certificate. It's an awesome name Grin
I also know plenty of grown up Eddie's and Ed's whose name hasn't held them back in life!

We really didn't like the name Edward and if you put it on the bc it will always get used so just use the name you like most!

Eddie sounds cutesy and childish to me. It also does not sound masculine at all. Would a grown man really like to be called Eddie?

Edmund, Edward, Edwin, Edgar are all much better options imo.

I would put Edward on the birth cert but introduce him as Eddie in your texts introducing him and for school etc.

I know someone who did this with Daniel but we only know them as Danny.

But he would have it if he wanted to in years to come. Love Eddie. Sounds so cool with Isla.

Thank you for all the reply’s some good points there we hadn’t thought about. It’s not that we don’t like the name Edward we do it’s just our daughters name is Isla and we are not sure if Edward is to much of a classical/old name against Isla. If he was first born then maybe it would flow better. That’s why we were thinking of Eddie rather than Edward.

I’d stick with Edward. Eddie is a cute nickname and you have Ned as an option too! My thoughts are that it is better to have a formal name for their career if they end up having a professional job say in law or something. I’ve never heard of a barrister with a nicknamey type name.

We have an eddie but he’s Eddison on his bc . Love both names although he only likes Eddie !

I like Eddie, but only as a nickname (and Eddie Vedder is an Edward).

Edward, Edmund and Edgar are some full name options.

I know an Eddie christened Edward who absolutely despises Edward - only ever uses Eddie, on paperwork and everything. I think for most though, having a longer option is nice.

If you do go for a long name on the bc though, I think Edgar is nicer than Edward.
