Parents of babies with unusual names...

Have you ever had someone laugh/snigger at your baby's name to your face/whilst you've been in close proximity? How did you deal with it? How did it make you feel? Happened to me for the first time today x

Thanks ladies, woken up feeling a bit better about it. They actually aren't a very nice family and I don't like any of their names either🙈 So I'm going to try and forget about it. Her name is a bit marmite but I knew that-it suits her and that's all that matters x

People who find unusual names (or unusual cultures, unusual foods etc) laughworthy are probably not very confident or secure.

I can beat that (cos everything's a competition Wink). My brother's friend who was a bit of a joker, extremely silly and irresponsible ended up having a ONS, which resulted in a gorgeous little boy. My friend came over to my house, to show us her new baby and the brother's friend was there. He said that he also had a new baby. My fiend knew him, assumed he was joking and burst out laughing... until she saw our serious faces. I nearly cringed myself inside out.

A school acquaintance of mine had a gorgeous little boy. I happened to meet her a few days after he was born. I asked her his name but totally misheard and thought she was making a joke. I laughed. I then heard his actual name a few weeks later.
8 years later and I still cringe thinking about it Blush

Either they were very rude or it's an in-joke or someone they know. Try not to worry. Mine have unusual names. I know some people will think they're daft, but that's fine: I have chosen them with care, so I'm happy with my choice.

I always wheel this story out, but when I was a teenager I used to say how much I loved the name Henry and I vividly remember my super conformist friend laughing her ass off, as if it was the most ridiculous name she'd ever heard. She's now all right on or pretends to be to fit in and is friends with people with a child named Ember, which she says she loves. People can be really stupid about names they aren't used to, is my point. She is probably just a bit of a dick.

Dd1 has got an Irish name which is now popular but when I had her it wasn't so she went through school getting called all sorts of mispronounced versions of it as we are in England. Then dd2 ha's the 900 name. Number 3 it's said as it's written, not really popular but known. She the only one who likes her name

My ds's name is in the top 200 and is not even that unusual but around here I get people double checking, misprounoucing and asking why I chose it. I still love it but it's made me decide to probably chose one in the top 100 this time around.

My dds name was in the late 900s when I had her, she's a teenager now and it's still in the 900's. I either get oh I love it or that's a weird name, never heard of that before. Dd doesn't like it either. I don't think it's out there at all just not that many about.

In general, the sort of reply you'd wish you'd given if you were me would have been 'Oh, what's your name?' Exaggerated laughter and ' I don't suppose anyone's told you, but that's slang for twat in this area'.

My dc have unusual names ... Never cared what people think tbh. Assume they are agog that they didn't have the guts to think outside the box at the registry office!!

Mike no she repeated my baby's name to her granddaughter and then they laughed. I didn't take too much notice at the time as I was a bit shocked but I can't get it out of my head now I'm home.

It might be something else she was sniggering about.
Maybe Childsname reminded her of something funny.

I've had a few odd looks and people double checking her name. Lots of people saying and spelling it wrong. But no direct laughing or insults - that's really rude!
