Have you ever had someone laugh/snigger at your baby's name to your face/whilst you've been in close proximity? How did you deal with it? How did it make you feel? Happened to me for the first time today x

I know a gorgeous 8 year old Effie and that is her complete name not a shortened form. I can’t think of a ‘long’ name with Effie for short...Euphemia??

Santawontbelong · 30/10/2017 21:25

I would love to share with you the only name that I have heard a dc called that has made me bite the inside of my mouth really hard it nearly bled.......
My ds was in hospital with croup over 20 years ago now.
The little girl in the next room - all had big paned windows for the nurses to check on them - I smiled at the dm as I looked at her as she was a stunning girl about 18 months, all frills and ribbons, not pj's like most.
The dm came outside as we weren't allowed in other rooms obviously.
I commented on how lovely her dd was.

Yes Gloria- Victoria was indeed a beauty. Grin

BernardBlacksHangover

Of course, I was stuck on trying to think of names beginning with E!

Lovely name OP, ignore the stupid sniggering woman!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/10/2017 20:53

I met a baby with a name I may have raised an eyebrow about. Then a few weeks later the mother went out of her way to make friends with me, invite me to everything and pretty much handed me a friendship group I’ve kept for 8 years, held my hand through my divorce and was 100% there for me. I will never judge a baby name ever again

BernardBlacksHangover · 30/10/2017 20:51

MadameJosephine

Funnily enough I think it can be short for Josephine! I had it on my list for dc2, but think we're having a boy.

Rinceoir · 30/10/2017 20:47

My DD has an Irish name. She has a common Irish name which is not common here in England. People generally persistently try to pronounce it how they think it should be pronounced based on an English phonetic interpretation of the spelling.

I have a similar issue with my own name here!

MadameJosephine · 30/10/2017 20:47

What is her Birth certificate name OP? Excuse my ignorance, Effie is really pretty but I don’t know what it’s short for

SpikeGilesSandwich · 30/10/2017 20:46

Effie is really sweet, OP and not silly at all, just ignore the cow.
I've read varying opinions of my DS's name on here and I'm pretty sure some people don't like it irl but that's their problem.
If we all liked the same things, the world would be very boring.

BakerBear · 30/10/2017 20:45

I ve had a few people ask if i named dd after where she was concieved.

I ve had many sniggers about her name in the past although as she is getting older (5years old) the sniggers are getting less frequent.

She went to a party last week with a twat of a childrens entertainer and i knew straightaway he would take the piss out of her name and i was right! Luckily she didnt know what the hell he was on about and nobody laughed

Shylo · 30/10/2017 20:43

I've never had someone laugh but my ex's uncle did suggest my some was a 'poor little bleeder' to have been saddled with the name and asked me what he'd done wrong to warrant it ....... but since the uncle had chosen to name his own son Wayne I wasn't particularly bothered about his opinion Halloween Smile

Lunathemoon · 30/10/2017 20:42

Oh wow Spookghost when I first told my sister she said 'well I will be calling her * (another diminutive of her BC name' I politely read passive aggressively told her that she wouldn't be calling her that and she would be corrected each and every time she tried. Safe to say she has only ever called her Effie😂

OP posts:
Ttbb · 30/10/2017 20:39

Nope. People will ask for clarification/mispronounce occasionally but never had anyone laugh. Names are not funny in any way though, just v unusual.

SpookghosttiAndMeatboos · 30/10/2017 20:38

When I told my sister what we'd named my son she was horrified and asked me if I loved him!

BernardBlacksHangover · 30/10/2017 20:35

Effie's lovely! Silly woman.

Lunathemoon · 30/10/2017 20:32

I think I may have mentioned her name on another thread, I don't think it's so unusual that it will be outing🙈 It's Effie.

icantgetnosleep5 · 30/10/2017 20:20

Ooh really want to hear ur name ! I wdnt worry about tht mean cow! My kids have interesting names and fairly wild nicknames , I get a few eye widens !
If u love the name, bollocks to anyone else ;)

SumAndSubstance · 30/10/2017 20:08

Oddly, it hasn't happened to DS1 who has a traditional, but very unusual name (fewer than 10 each year), but it has happened with DS2 who has a name which hovers around the top 100 (and is also a traditional name). It was a schoolgirl who sniggered, but still.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 30/10/2017 12:13

After repeating DS's name a couple of times to this woman I'd never met before, she said "Well I'll just call him [long, more accepted version of his name]"... I was Hmm. Of course, her son was called Henry.

I just thought, 'well I doubt I'll ever speak to you again so that's irrelevant' Grin I can't remember what I did, probably just this face Hmm

(Nothing wrong with Henry, it's DS's middle name, but they are ten-a-penny round here.)

HamSandWitches · 30/10/2017 11:45

Dd3 has the nickname of a traditional name even on her birth certificate. I toyed with the idea and sort of wish I had used the long version now but dd doesnt like it, she likes her shortened version though so I guess I made the right choice as she would be called the longer version now and again through school. I wouldn't worry about it you can't please everyone, some people have names I would never use as I don't like them but they probably hate my kids names. It's just rude though to laugh

littlechous · 30/10/2017 11:42

I can’t imagine anyone laughing like that, how bloody rude!

I now have an irrational need to know what her name is

But if BC name is ‘normal’ then there’s really no issue, as you said when she’s older she can always go by her full name if she wants. But I’m sure you’re raising a confident lil girl who won’t care about twats others opinions on her name!

DiegoMadonna · 30/10/2017 11:38

Everybody likes different names and nobody likes EVERY name, so we have all/all will meet people/children with names we don't like much at times in our lives. That's totally normal. Laughing or making rude comments about it is obviously not acceptable. She's the one with the problem, not you.

Lunathemoon · 30/10/2017 11:21

If it helps her BC name is a far more traditional name, her every day name is just a shortening. So I guess if she feels the same as this (horrible) woman she can just go by that.

Needadvicetoleave · 30/10/2017 11:16

Yes. I just ignore it.

Twooter · 30/10/2017 11:11

I went to a comedy show where the comedian asked a boy his name. It was a bit odd - can't remember what. He then asked the brother, who also had an unusual name. He then asked the dad, who was called something like John. He then spent 5 minutes taking the piss about these two boys names. Very unpleasant to watch.

confusedlittleone · 30/10/2017 11:06

It happened to my mum when I was a baby (and happens to me when people hear my full name) but I HATE my name as well so don't really blame anyone! Sorry tho that's not really much help! (For context my name is a drug reference)
