Parents of babies with unusual names...

How rude!

Both my children have unusual names (not made up, just sub-1000 in the England and Wales stats). I haven’t had any openly negative reactions, but some “oh, how interesting...” type of responses. I have, however, had people frequently spell/pronounce their names incorrectly, but I was prepared for this. HV wrote an entirely different (and male!) name in DD’s red book, which always gives me a chuckle.

Only 13 babies were born with DD's name in her year of birth (although I do know one other of a similar age with the same name). it's a total marmite name on here and we've had a few raised eyebrows but no laughs. I'd say you just met an idiot.

How can you know in advance that an unusual name will match their personality?

Of course but I still don’t get why you would want to set them up in the first place as being boring and like everyone else?
Why not want to give your child a name that will match their personality and make them feel special and unique?
There are 5 girls in my daughters class of 28 with the same name and the teacher has to say their surnames also.

I love Effie and would have suggested it for our DD but I knew that DH wouldn't be keen.

I heard somebody shout for a Beyonce in a shop once and a little girl went tottering over....I did have a little chuckle to myself afterwards. Certainly wouldn't do it so obviously to someone's face!

Pink - you don’t need an unusual name to be special or unique - their personality is what matters not their name!

All my children’s names are #1000+ which is exactly what I want, I worried in the late 2000s when my eldests name started creeping up in popularity.
We’ve grown to love it when people make remarks or faces, we now know straight away these people are 1 boring and 2 rude so my children have no need to talk to them.
What I don’t get is why would you want to name your child the same name as 6 other kids in their class, do their parents really think their children are not special or unique?
If i hear another Harry, Lilly, Amelia or George I think I will go crazy but I wouldn’t laugh or make comment as that is extremely rude.

Ps the only name I’ve laughed at was amaryllis- I couldn’t help myself it was an involuntary reaction!

I've had a few people turn their noses up at our baby name ideas for baby number three (due tomorrow, for the love of god child, hurry up!)

The only name that made me raise an eyebrow was heard at a Christian football league my children attend. Mentioned as people attend it tend to be Christians as matches are on Saturday not Sunday and so should have a passing knowledge of the bible.
Hearing Jonah being shouted out was a first, not the luckiest person in the bible!

My son has an unusual name but it suits him and he likes it( sometimes).

OP only a total bellend would have that mean reaction. Says a lot about her and nothing about the name. Don’t let it bother you.

The fact that she has a grand daughter is the clue to me. Different generations have such different ideas about names. Fifteen years ago names like Hugo and Rupert would have had most people sniggering, now they are all the rage. My mum thought all our favourite 'old man' names for our son were hilarious. Same goes for anything remotely hip, like Silas. Totally normal names now. This women is just out of touch (and a little ignorant to teach her little GD to laugh at others' names..) Don't give it a second thought!

Effie is a beautiful name and quite common in Greece. Ds has the most unusual name in the world (ancient Greek) and I have had a few sniggers but most people tend to look befuddled when they hear it. I love the name though and am glad he's one of a kind

Chuckling about the comments regarding Henry as a name! My DS is a Henry and it really suits him (and he loves his name), but when I was a teenager my brother had a friend called Henry and I remember thinking it was the most preposterous, old-man-ish name ever!

Effie is lovely but even if her name wad Starfish Amaretto from thebsex position and drink of choice in her conception, surely you just smile politely and make a platitude about it being original / distinctive etc.

My friend works with children and had to keep a very straight face when one of the children she worked with said they had a new brother named Daddy-Cool! I wonder now though if the child was having her on... Apparently the older child had a pretty common(ly used) name.

I laughed out loud when I heard 'Princess' shouted across soft play once, luckily the girl was with a child minder not her mother who also laughed. I'd of felt awful otherwise, I didn't mean to laugh out loud!

I've inwardly sniggered at a friend who has an 'aprillia' too but never to her face!

DS2 has a name just in the top 100, and I've had a friend say she hates it, my mum say it's common and MIL say it's not a child's name.

Stuff all of them, everyone likes it now he's nearly 1, and 700 other sets of parents in the U.K. liked it the year he was born too!
