We have one DS. He has a traditional boy's name (think along the William/George lines) it's in the top 50 but not top 10.

We are having another boy in a few weeks time. We want a similarly 'traditional' name. Easy to spell and familiar but I'd rather he wasn't one of 3/4 in his class or peer group.

Front runners so far are :
James (popular we know, but I hardly ever hear of any baby James'... Which is odd!)
Robert
Russell
Tristan
Ellis
Elliot
Benjamin (but I am not hugely fond of Ben)
Peter
Robin
Rowan
Laurence

Suggestions and opinions welcome!!

I have a few front runners but I am interested to see what other people say before I reveal them 😬

I love James, Elliot, Ellis and Robert (only as a full name though, I know too many Robs in their 30s and Robbie and Bobby I really don't like). Not that keen on Tristan and Rowan sorry. I'd avoid Benjamin if you don't like Ben. Robin is lovely and I like Lawrence with this spelling. Russell and Peter are both great and definitely more unusual with this generation. I

I love Elliot, James, and Benjamin. Though as PP said, I'd avoid Benjamin if I weren't a fan of Ben.

Evanna13 · 22/10/2017 16:43

My favourites are James and Elliot.

TheApprentice · 22/10/2017 14:37

We must have very similar taste. I have a Jonathan and an Elliot! From your list I like James (which I don't think is as popular as it was) Robert , Peter and Rowan.

elisa2502 · 22/10/2017 14:35

As a teacher in a School for children with behaviour problems avoid
Ben
Tristan
Elliot

daisypond · 22/10/2017 14:28

I like most of your list, though I'm not keen on Rowan or Robin. I like James and Laurence and Peter the most. What about Michael, Martin, Richard, Julian, David?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/10/2017 14:19

I love Robert.

Don't go with Joseph if you don't like Joe, it's just too easy to shorten. I like Jos for Joseph as in Jos Buttler the England cricketer.

LilyPondFrog · 22/10/2017 14:15

Congrats.

My favourites from your list are: James, Tristan, Ellis, Elliot and Rowan.

I think that Robert with the nn Robbie would be nice too.

CakeRattleandRoll · 22/10/2017 14:11

Love Robert and Peter. Joseph is great too.

Buntysoven · 22/10/2017 01:20

Love Peter, pp suggestion of Joseph and Edwin.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/10/2017 22:28

I like Joseph, Joe/Joss.
Robert is a good name too.
Peter and Russell.
How about Adam ?

tararabumdeay · 21/10/2017 22:20

I think it's time Roland and Roderick made it back.

Of course you could go with Ian - no baby boys in the uk were named Ian last stats. I have met so many people called Ian, mainly scruffy under achievers but maybe that's the sort of people I gravitate towards. Never met a scruffy Roland or Roderick.

Sophronia · 21/10/2017 22:05

How about David, Andrew, Gregory, Luke, Michael, Anthony, Patrick, Adam, Dominic, Nathaniel, Philip, Vincent, Mark, Paul, Jeremy, Simon or Francis?

Sophronia · 21/10/2017 21:57

I love Robert, Peter and Laurence.

BackforGood · 21/10/2017 20:26

I like James, Robert, Peter and Laurence from your list.

NamesNamesAndMoreNames · 21/10/2017 20:23

I like Billy for William :) I don't mind Robbie/Bobby for Robert.

I knew there must be lots of James's purely because of where it appears on the top 100, I'm always suprised by it as I know so few! My DH knows loads so I sort of lump it in with his generation.

I like Simon but we can't use it. Same for John! Jonathan is my favourite name ever but we just can't use it.

James is one of the most popular names I’ve heard for babies. Do you like any dominitives of other names? Johnnie? Billy? Bobby? Jimmy?

ScarletSienna · 21/10/2017 20:16

Names-we can’t use Nicholas with our surname either!

CamperVamp · 21/10/2017 20:14

I think Simon is an underused name.

John
Andrew

feral · 21/10/2017 20:09

I know loads of baby James! Elliotts too - three in DS reception class.

Rowan is my favourite.

NamesNamesAndMoreNames · 21/10/2017 20:09

pesoisaTool

His name is in your list 😉

Lots of other good names to think about.

The ones coming out top are probably our favourites too.

Robert, Peter and Laurence so far.

I really really like Russell but my DH isn't keen.

Surinah · 21/10/2017 20:07

I love Tristan and Elliot. Traditional but not as common as the others on your list.

Jooni · 21/10/2017 20:07

How about William? Will is so lovely.

Henry
Isaac
Vincent
Thomas
Miles

Jooni · 21/10/2017 20:06

Love Robin!

PhuntSox · 21/10/2017 20:01

Love Laurence, also James.

How about John?
