How would you pronounce...

...Evelyn?

I love Ev-lin but not so keen on Eeev-lin/Eve/Evie or any other variation.

Will I constantly be correcting people on the pronunciation of DD2’s name?

Evelyn doesn’t have an r in it.

No - but the second "e" could be a schwa which is pronounced "uh"

Thanks all. For those of you asking whether it’s for a boy or girl, you’ll notice I said DD in my original post.

I’m finding it hard to know the difference between Ev-lin and Ev-uh-lin though. Surely if you say it at a normal speed it’s basically the same?!

Again, thank you for opinions, it’s been really helpful.

Eve-linn. You can’t control how folk will say a name,so if it’ll irk dump the name

We have an Ev-e-lyn. I am not keen on Eve-lyn (just personal preference) and I believe it is the traditional male pronunciation, but I detest Ev-lyn which is how some relatives pronounce it (despite being told). I silently grit my teeth and just slip up occasionally with their names petty, moi? Grin

It is a gorgeous name though, and pretty when written down as well.

I have a 5 yr old Evelyn. We pronounce her name ev uh Lyn it is sometimes mispronounced as eve-Lyn by not very often.
It's a lovely name. We always get comments on how pretty it is.

For a boy or for a girl? It's a unisex name.

Anyway, I like Eve-lin for either.

I’ve known a few Evelyn’s and have never heard it pronounced ever-lyn, really don’t like it pronounced that way tbh. Eve-Lyn or Ev-Lyn are nice though.

Whether there's an official pronunciation depending on whether the Evelyn in question is male or female is kind of irrelevant. The fact is that female Evelyns (can't imagine too many male Evelyns are being born these days) are as likely to pronounce their own name eeva-lin and evva-lin. I know several young and old female Evelyns and it's evenly split as to how they pronounce it.

As Chaffinch said I think it technically depends if it is being used as a male or female name - are thinking for a son or daughter?

My Dd is Evelyn - we say Everlyn but she gets eve-lyn all the time.
We call her Lynnie for short. :)

My DD is an Evelyn pronounced Eve-Lynn. She does get both pronounciations so that is defintely something to bear in mind Smile

I agree with pp, you'll undoubtedly get a mixture of pronunciations.

There was a thread about this name and pronunciation recently. Both the children with this name that I know pronounce it Eve-lyn.

But you know it has two different pronunciations so there's no point asking people on this thread how they'd say it. In real life an Evelyn will get called both eev-lin and evva-lin. So if it bugs you I'd put the name aside.

My mil is Evelyn and I love the name. We all pronounce it eeve-lin but she is mainly called either eve or lin (depends on who the audience are).

There are two in my DD’s class at school. One is pronounced Eve- Lin and the other Ev-lin
