I’ve never been keen on Annie. It seems unfinished somehow and a bit harsh sounding, whereas Anna is beautiful.

I have a friend Annie, short for Annika - which I think is a lovely name.

Bizarrely, I just got into my car and on the radio there was a song playing. It was ' Annie, I'm not your daddy' by Kid Creole and the Coconuts, it came out in 1982 when I was in secondary school and was sung at me constantly by all the hilarious people in my school, another reason why I hated my name. Grin.

And yes Tigertots, I would also have loved to have been called Cordelia, (see even Anne of Green Gables hated her name). Smile

I love Annie - but it’s my mums name so it would be a bit odd to use it for a DD.

It’s nice, do think it’s a tad boring though. Not much you can do with it except shorten in to Anne. I really like the name Anastasia though, lots of shortening possibilities including Annie. (I really like Tasia, Nastia, and Sia)

I really like it. We considered it for DD2. DH was in the camp of wanting a longer name on the birth certificate for what he saw as more of a nicknamey name, and we couldn't agree on one so ended up with something else. I do feel the same as him about some names but do think Annie stands as a name in its own right, and even DH might admit that 13 years on having met a few in the meantime!

TheRollingCrone Yes I have read Anne of Green Gables and she was awesome, you are right Smile, but I obviously have a hang up about my name (I have no middle name to use either, thanks parents!).

I used to spend quite a lot of time thinking of different names to change mine too when I was a child and I never have grown into my name yet! Maybe when I am really old I will like it.

Noooooo (sorry), my name is Anne and I got called Annie or Anne at school. It is such a boring name, I have always hated it with a passion. There was no one else in my primary or secondary called Anne, there were a couple of Ann-maries, as much as its nice not to have every other child with the same name as yours it is not so nice if it is because your name is so dull no one else would lumber their child with a name like it.

It is such an old name that when I went to work at 16 half the middle aged women in the office where called Anne/Annie. Lots of people when I introduce myself say "oh you don't look like an Anne/Annie", because they are assumed to be middle aged women with grey curly hair!

Also all the dull side characters in books are called Anne/Annie, so the heroine is Sienna/ Charlotte/ Rose etc, and her dull frumpy friend is called Anne/Annie.

I almos started this thread! I love it and seriously considering it if I have a girl. I thing it's really sweet for a little one but not to 'girly' and it sounds quite cool on an older girl/woman too.

I loved-to-hate the character Annie, in an episode of Butterflies: she broke the heart of dear sweet Adam. I fondly remember wanting to enter the story, and sing the Clout song "If she doesn't come back, I'll be your substitute..." to Adam.

But I DO like the name Annie; it would be a welcome retro-Victorian "breath of fresh air" in a world of Madisons & Paiges!
