Longlist for girls (boys are easy!)

DappledThings · 08/10/2017 21:21

DC2 due at Xmas. Both times we've found a boy's name and both liked it early on but struggled with girls. If DS had been a girl he'd have been Penelope but we're both quite off it now for some reason.

This is the longlist. I hate alliteration so anything beginning with M (DS) or H (surname) is out. Middle name will be Jean after two great-grandmother's, one on each side.

Zoe - current favourite
Eloise
Esther
Dorothea - I really need to take this off as DH hates it and I don't think I'm getting anywhere!
Cassandra - like this and Cassie for short. Keep hearing in Rodney Trotter's voice though!
Claudia - but CJ in The West Wing was Claudia Jean, is that weird?
Constance - Connie for short

Thoughts? Other suggestions?

Thank you for all opinions, not much consensus! As regards Christmas names I'm not a huge fan. If it's a boy he will be Joseph and I had a thread about that a while ago asking for people to confirm it's normal and common enough for people not to make a Christmas connection.

As she/he is due at Christmas, have you considered a Christmas name?

Natalie
Holly
Ivy
Christine
Estelle (star)
Stella
Lucia
Felicity
etc

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 09/10/2017 17:05

Constance is my favourite, Zoe and Esther least favourite.

holdthewine · 09/10/2017 17:02

Forgot Esther!

I’ve always liked it and know an adult lovely one. I like Hester even more.

Eloise
Esther

Working through in the order of your list:

I know too many Zoes all 20s and 30s so I’m a bit over it. And they seem to be called Zo.

Eloise I like but prefer Heloise (know a lovely one)

Dorothea - LOVE and Dotty it Thea NNs

Always had Cassandra on my list but couldn’t get it past DH

I didn’t watch The West Wing and these things fade. Sounds good to me.

Constance NN Connie, like it and gaining in popularity. Was on DDs shortlist this year (had a boy)

Ttbb · 09/10/2017 16:30

Constance definitely!

UsernameInvalid66 · 09/10/2017 16:18

I don't dislike any of these, but my favourites are Zoe, Eloise and Claudia - all of which were on my longlist for the girl I never had!

NikiBabe · 09/10/2017 15:01

Go for Zoe. Lovely name.

starkid · 09/10/2017 14:44

Out of those I only really like Zoe

LarkDescending · 09/10/2017 12:35

I love Zoe, Eloise and Clara from your list.

Cassandra is forever "Only Fools" for me, though Cassie is lovely.

I know two babies named Constance - wonder whether this is the next Florence?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 09/10/2017 09:39

I would go with Zoe Eloise, a lovely name !

DappledThings · 09/10/2017 08:40

Jooni I really like Cecily from your list but DH has already vetoed that as too twee. Although Cecilia remains a possibility.

Esther is beautiful. Zoe lovely too.

Calla
Willa
Florence
Cecily
Lydia
Kezia
Beatrice
Evelyn
Meredith
Alice
Blythe
Eleanor
Leonora
Catrin

Constance and Dorothea are my favourite but if DH hates it then it's not really a contender.

I also like Zoe and Esther

Really dislike Cassandra, though like Cassie, and Claudia

ChocolateCrunch · 09/10/2017 08:01

Not sure about your original list, how about

Jennifer
Caitlyn
Sabrina
Felicity
Georgia
Eliza

Pemba · 09/10/2017 07:52

Zoe is lovely, simple to spell and has a lovely meaning. It's not ubiquitous at the moment either. Good choice!

I also like Eloise, and all of your names really, except maybe Constance.

SuperBeagle · 09/10/2017 00:17

I like Zoe and Eloise best.

Not keen at all on Esther, Dorothea, Claudia or Constance.

Cassandra is okay, but I prefer just Cassie by a million miles.

CakeRattleandRoll · 08/10/2017 23:43

My favourites are Zoe, Esther and Cassandra.
Suggestions:
Elspeth
Celeste
Larissa

Liadain · 08/10/2017 23:10

Zoe - lovely name
Eloise - nope
Esther - nope, very hissy sounding name to me
Dorothea - your dh is right, it's awful!
Cassandra - gorgeous and Cassie is lovely too
Claudia - never liked it personally
Constance - nothing really wrong with it but no from me. I've known a few Connie's and they were always meek and wet types so that colours my view of it!
Clara is a nice name.

bridgetreilly · 08/10/2017 23:01

In order, I like:
Dorothea
Claudia
Clara
Constance
Zoe
Esther
Eloise
Cassandra

Other suggestions:
Phoebe
Lois
Rosalind
Juliet
Annabel
Elinor
Felicity

RoboticSealpup · 08/10/2017 22:45

I only like Esther.

Sophronia · 08/10/2017 22:41

I like Esther, Claudia and Constance.

Smoliver · 08/10/2017 22:40

Zoe is beautiful and a classic name. I like Esther too because the name means "star" which is kind of appropriate for Christmas time. Her nickname could be Essie or Ettie.

I think my favourites from your list are Constance and Cassandra, especially with the nicknames Connie and Cassie.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/10/2017 21:47

Would have said Dorothea. Quite like Claudia and Cassie.
Constance is awful. Yet its an, (although not very popular) a very liked name none the less.
With her being due at Christmas would you not consider a Christmas name.
Natalie. Gabrielle. Nicole. Holly. Ivy
Belle.

DappledThings · 08/10/2017 21:46

Waxon I forgot Clara, also on list already
