Asher and Jared

Just wondered what the general Mumsnet consensus was on these two names? I really like both as outsider possibilities for DS2 but have concerns. So what are your impressions of both and what assumptions (if any) might you make about a little Asher or Jared? Thanks

My nephew's an Asher. I like it.

There's a fair few Biblical names in the family; old and new testament - non-religious family, but they're good classics.

Jared feels a bit dated. I know two Jareds both born in the 80s. I prefer it to Asher though.

Asher would be on my list if DP liked it. Less fond of Jared but I do think that's Labyrinth! Even though he's Jareth...

I'm not a huge fan of Asher but it's a nice enough name.

I like Jared but it does seem a bit dated. Maybe because the only 2 I know are 50s and 30s

I know a lovely boy called Asher. Jared just makes me think of Jareth the goblin king in Labyrinth, I'm afraid...

Jared was my number one choice if I'd had a son - that would have been, let me see, thirty-six years ago.

Asher, or Ashur, both nice, too.

Fwiw, I know a lot of Jewish boys aged 1-20 & not a single Jared among them. I have known a few non-Jewish Jareds and they were all trouble.

I love Asher but all I can think of is Brimful is Asha. Even though it’s a completely different spellig

Greentea, I think Asher is crossing over into more common usage, like Seth and Josh have done (I'm Jewish). Cohen, obviously, is a completely different matter and it sets my teeth on edge when people use it as a first name as it's special and set aside for (surname) descendants of the Cohens (priestly class). I'd find Yiddish names a bit odd on non-Jews, but Asher is Hebrew.

Jared, to me, sounds like a Jayden, Braeden, Kayden kind of name.

I think they're both in the 'everyone has heard of them, easy to say and spell, but not made up/ridiculous' category.

I prefer Asher because it looks and sounds nicer imo. Jared is a perfectly good name though.

I like Ash and Jed too, good nn potential with both of them.

Both names sound Jewish to me and both have a long history but not heard so much in the UK.

Interesting responses so far! Thanks everyone. My concerns were that people might think that both names were made up/had no history behind them but so far no one seems to have thought that.

The only 'sinister' link to Jared is possibly Jareth - David Bowie in Labyrinth that i can think of!

I like Asher very much. Jared sounds like the troubled boy in the class (to me, apologies to those w Jareds).
