We're down to:

Athena
Xanthe
Romilly
Delphi

Which do you like best? Do any/all of them make you think "What a bunch of pretentious twats"?

I find all the pretentious and posh cack really tiresome.

Liadain · 23/09/2017 12:34

Athena - extremely pretentious sounding

Xanthe - bit poncey sounding but my favourite of your list. Probably the one I'd like to have myself most!

Romilly - least pretentious but I cant stand it - unbearably frilly, flouncy and fussy sounding

Delphi - adventure centre in Ireland/ very pretentious name

Sophronia · 23/09/2017 12:26

I like Athena best

CakeRattleandRoll · 23/09/2017 11:59

Love Xanthe. I wouldn't consider any of your names posh, I would call them imaginative and definitely preferable to choosing a name that just 'fits in' and has been top 10 for years. But I suspect my 'posh threshold' is quite high and I know my name would be considered posh by many.

Smoliver · 23/09/2017 11:25

Really like Xanthe and Athena. Both are unique and sound pretty to me.

SellFridges · 23/09/2017 11:24

I have a Romilly. She only ever gets Rom for short. We thought it would be Romy. Definitely not posh though!

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 23/09/2017 11:22

I don't think Romilly is 'posh' op, if that's the only reason your dp doesn't like it. I like it less than Athena and Xanthe, as a get a girly sort of vibe from Romilly; it might be the potential shortenings - Romy, Rom, Roms, Milly.

I think I don't like Delphi much, as it sounds too much like Darcy and Dulcie to me, which aren't really my cup of tea. I prefer Delphine, but it's still nowhere near as nice as your other options.

Ilovewillow · 23/09/2017 09:36

I think they're all pretty and not pretentious at all. Xanthe and Romilly are my favourites.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 23/09/2017 09:36

I like them, except Romilly. Is it posh? It just reminds me of Romulins from Star Trek.

ChocolateCrunch · 23/09/2017 09:29

I really like Athena from your list

MammieBear · 23/09/2017 07:06

Xanthe means Golders and Athena means Wisdom, need I say more?

Athena

TatianaLarina · 23/09/2017 02:19

I'd go for Romilly out of those.

I like Athena but it's hard to shorten, Xanthe's a bit of a mouthful.

DandySeaLioness · 23/09/2017 02:05

love Athena!! Smile

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 23/09/2017 02:01

Athena. Very pretty. (Thea also nice, as an abbreviation/ alternative).

To reassure you: I doubt the poster shop brand/ memories of tennis lady and baby-holder man etc. register on young people's radars these days!

(I'm a similar age to you, though: just had 80s' flashback to their famous Syd Brak purple eyeshadow woman and her melting red telephone...). Smile

SuperBeagle · 23/09/2017 01:17

Delphi.

It was on my long list for both DDs. Smile

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2017 23:25

To add... I don't buy into any of that "posh" nonsense.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2017 23:24

I LOVE Athena.

Yika · 22/09/2017 22:30

I don't think Romilly is posh. It's a lovely name.

I also like the name Athena though I too remember the poster shop! Xanthe is nice but very on-trend. I like Delphi but it sounds a bit faddy. I do love Greek sounding names though, how about Artemis, Cassandra, Callista, Melinda, Daphne, Danae, Georgia or Olympia?

JustThisOneTime · 22/09/2017 22:24

Romilly's coming out of this better than I expected. DP has been lobbying against it on the grounds of over-poshness. Hmm.

I'm old enough to remember Athena being the poster shop, but then I'm ancient (in spite of just having had a baby)

Xanthe is beautiful.

Mulch · 22/09/2017 22:07

Love love love Athena

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 22/09/2017 22:06

I love Athena! Also really like Xanthe. Romilly is nice, but not my favourite. I'm not mad on Delphi.

early30smum · 22/09/2017 22:06

Really like Xanthe, Romilly and Athena. Very pretty, and unusual without being ridiculous!

Allthecake · 22/09/2017 21:45

Romilly is lovely, don't think it's too pretentious or frilly at all. The others though I'd have to say I think are a little pretentious (sorry).

Threenme · 22/09/2017 21:43

Really sorry op none are my cup of tea at all but my kids names are all in most popular 10 so I have no imagination and am probably best ignored!
