Is it awful?

I know of one; the actress Emerald Fennell who's the daughter of jeweller Theo Fennell but I fear it's a bit.....

...stripper-y?

Or Green of course!

Emerald Cunard.
I rather love it as a name much to my surprise.
Surname though? Won't work with Smith

I think it is fine.

Personally I really like it, but DH and I do have rather unconventional taste. Think there’s a Jacqueline Wilson character called Emerald but I may have misremembered.

I love it!
