Thoughts on Amelie?

I love love love this name however is it too close to Amelia? I think it sounds lovely but wouldn't want her to spend her whole life being confused with Amelia, especially as Amelia is so popular. Opinions and any suggestions welcome!

Amelie will always be confused for Amelia and Emily, considering the popularity of both of those names.

I don't like it. It sounds forced/unnatural when said in a non-French accent.

I think Amelie is a pretty name. It makes me think of the self titled film "Amelie," which is a great film. The character Amelie in the film is a quirky, strong, independent character - great characteristics for any child.

It's a very pretty name, but not as unusual as it once was. I don't think people would confuse it with anything else.

I only have one person that insists on calling my DD Amelia instead of Amelie. Everyone else manages fine

I wouldn't because it would just annoy me that everyone pronounced it like Emily with an A, rather than the French pronunciation. But if you like it pronounced like that, go for it!

About half the little girls in our village seem to be called Amelie so everyone round here knows how to spell it and pronounce it. It's a pretty name. I like Elodie too and that's very French.

I'm not keen. It's very close to Emily and could easily be misheard.

Also, I think Kate and Simon's daughter in Doctor Foster is named Amelie.

I love.it. It was top of the list for our child..who turned out to be a boy (who is now19!!)...never did use it!!

I really like it and it was on my shortlist but when I was discussing names with a friend (at the time) I noticed the British don't pronounce it how I liked it the French way so I dropped it. Another friend used it a few months later and she was forever correcting people's pronunciation, this was several years ago now so I think she's given up. So, imo, if you like the French pronounciation, you're probably better off picking something else, but if you like the British way, it's a lovely name.

I absolutely love the name Amelie (although loved the film). Only reason I didn't use as I knew a few Emily's being born around the same time so did think it was similar.

Lovely name but after watching so many horrors any nice cutesy girly name makes me cringe because it always makes me picture a possessed little girl with a white dress and manky hair Sad sorry

Very popular and regularly mangled when pronounced. More likely to be confused with Emily (also ubiquitous though thankfully had its day for the next 60yrs) than Amelia.

Around here it's VERY over-used (London/Southeast). Every second girl I've met in the past 10 years is called either Amelie or Amelia.

Do you know that Amelia actually means 'has no arms and legs' - it's actually a medical term. I'm guessing a lot of those parents don't realise that!

As a native English speaker who also speaks French, I find this name frustrating because none of the rules seem to apply for pronouncing it correctly.
What is your preferred pronunciation for Amelie? Does it rhyme with 'family' for you (Am-uh-lee)? If so, perhaps the Scandi version 'Amalie' would appeal to you. If you would prefer a name similar to Amelia but less popular this might be the ticket. Sophie Amalie was a queen of Denmark and their main palace, Amalienbourg, is named for her.
Or do you say it French-style, more like Ah-may-lee? Would you spell it with the accent: Amélie? You don't have to be French for your DD to have a French name.
Personally, I think there are loads of lovely names for girls outside the top 100 which are still easy to pronounce and spell so I chose family names from those for my DDs. But I also appreciate that others love a well known name from the top 20 - after all those names are top 20 because they're so well loved.

She can always just say Amilie 'like the film'. Most names get confused. I've known people to insist on calling Annas Ann. Or Joan Jane and the like.
