Not pg and not in need of boys' names. But am I alone in thinking that Derek is z lovely classic elegant name and well over due a revival? It's the same sort of vintage as Arthur/ Ernest/ Archie/ Oscar which are all super popular, but I've never met one under the age of 70.

Where are all the baby Dereks?

Old and awful.

NotAgainYoda · 20/09/2017 16:00

No, but some of a similar era are good:

Eric
Ray

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 20/09/2017 00:38

I'm a Derek. And Dereks don't run.

ScaryMonstersAndSuoerCreeps · 19/09/2017 20:33

Grin I feel five years old again!!! Grin

NearLifeExperience · 19/09/2017 18:18

Aww, thanks Thalia that's such fun. DG made all the other presenters seem so wooden. I was 5 when this was made, so I probably saw it when it was first broadcast!

Maybe I'd consider Derek for a dog, now!

For your viewing pleasure... Wink
(make sure the sound's on, bottom right of his yellow flares).

Derek Griffiths is on tour at the moment with Sian Phillips in Driving Miss Daisy. I saw a review on Sunday.

NearLifeExperience · 19/09/2017 13:23

Dirk the Dutch version of Derek - well, from the same root, at least.
It sounds way cooler, and is also the name of a type of dagger, which gives it a nice, dangerous edge!

mintich · 19/09/2017 13:22

I know a very good looking Derek in his late 30s

EdithWeston · 19/09/2017 13:14

'Is Dirk a form of Derek?'

Well it was used by Derek in Coronation Street when he wanted to sound more dashing to impress new ladeez. But he still ended up with Mavis

mylaptopismylapdog · 19/09/2017 13:11

Derek is OK but I really struggle with the idea of a baby called Derek for some reason.

endehors · 19/09/2017 13:05

classic and elegant? Derek?? Don't be daft.

Grin Agree. Even at the height of its popularity Derek could never have been described as classic and elegant.

Not my taste, OP. Not a timeless classic, which is what my taste amounts to, on the whole.

Viviennemary · 19/09/2017 13:01

No. It's a name for over 60's not a baby. Though I suppose they will have been babies once. It's not even that nice a name.

NearLifeExperience · 19/09/2017 12:59

Aww, I'd forgotten about the wonderful Derek Griffiths, Thalia, My favourite Play School presenter as a child. My position on Derek has now softened just a little!

midsomermurderess · 19/09/2017 12:51

Is Dirk a form of Derek? If it is I would prefer to go with that.

ibentmywookie · 19/09/2017 11:40

It conjures up visions of late 70s suburban hell for me, living in a cul de sac, playing golf with Roy and Trevor, washing the Ford Granada on a Sunday, G Plan furniture, pampas grass, and shag pile carpets.

TheNaze73 · 19/09/2017 11:23

I think it's ironically brilliant & genuinely think it'd be great.

Would make a real change from the countless Harry's, Alfie's, Oliver's & Jack's that will be the Kevin's, Darren's & Gary's of 2030

user327854831 · 19/09/2017 11:18

^where

user327854831 · 19/09/2017 11:18

In One Tree Hill, there was a stalker named Derek. He was referred to as "Psycho Derek", as though that was his name.

I wondered why I'd got the idea from, now I remember!

Lemondrop99 · 19/09/2017 11:14

Nah, not yet. For me, Derek sits with the likes of Ray, Colin, Roger, Keith, Roy and Alan. My parents' generation and all feel a bit dated/naff to me.

The current trend for old names is from my grandparents' generation.

If Derek has a come back, it'll be when our kids start having children.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 19/09/2017 09:23

Doubters: don't diss Derek. Grin

Derek
PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2017 08:31

God no. Just no.

ShowOfHands · 19/09/2017 08:28

I know a 3yo Derek. Derek Junior to give him his full name.

SuperBeagle · 19/09/2017 08:20

It does have a kind of male-stalker/flasher ring to it. If that's the image you want for your baby then go for it!

TDHManchester · 19/09/2017 08:12

No,dont do Derek..you will blight him.
