Scottishish names...

I'm pregnant with DC2. We're team yellow and have a good list of boys' names. DD is Flora and i am struggling to find a girls' name I like as much.

I'd like a Scottish link but have discounted Isla, Iona, Eilidh, Ailsa, Fiona, Mairi, Mhairi for either being overused in our area or friends using them.

I need a name with two or more syllables as we have a short surname. I don't mind names that can be shortened. Help!

You discounted Iona and Isla but what about other island names... Skye, Canna, Eriskay, Soay, Lismore, Tiree might be unusual and nice

Following esk1mo's suggestion,

Rosslyn as in Rosslyn Chapel, just outside Edinburgh.

The Place Names track can take you to Iona, which you've already ruled out. I do know of a little girl called Tiree.

Helen - as in 'Fair Helen of Kirkconnel'

I know an Eilis (pronounced Ay-lish), very pretty name

I know a Rosalyn which is more Spanish but i associate it with Scotland. Also non-Scottish names Evelyn/Aveline are pretty Smile

Has Lilias been suggested yet? It's Scottish and has a similarly retro feel to Flora I think.

I know what you mean, there are loads of Scottish boys' names I love, not as many girls' names though.

I think it's just the Isobel spelling...I know Isabel (and all the variants) are really popular and that puts me off for whole different reasons. Believe me, I know how bloody-minded i sound.

I think you're right, though. Flora has links to Latin/French/Spanish and Scotland. I was hoping for a name I hadn't considered but I've not heard anything new really. Not that that's the fault of the very helpful Mumsnetters who've replied!

Isobel and it's variants are so popular right now, definitely not old fashioned.

What about just going classic European? Elizabeth/Isabelle, Alexandra, Clare/Clara, Imogen, Mary/Maria, Anna, etc. Just as likely to crop up in Scotland as anywhere else.
