What you do think of the name Liyla?

We sometimes talk about what we would name our future child and I really like the sound lee-la. But we couldn't find any name that resembles this sound. Leila may does but it sometimes cause confusion and pronounced as Lay-lah. What do you think of the name Liyla? Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure why a 'y' would be pronounced like an 'e' in the beginning of a name like this? Especially after an 'i'

I would go for Leela if I was you.

Agree with every else. Leela would be how I’d spell it. Liyla looks like a misspelling of Lilah.

If you would like it pronounced Leela then spell it Leela...? I know a Leela I think it is Sanskrit.

Your spelling looks like a misspelling of Lila(h).

Sorry, Leila is not always an Arabic name. Had it in my family for at least 130 years (great great aunt, great aunt, aunt and my daughter) and we’re from Yorkshire and with no connections to the Middle East. It’s always been pronounced Lee-la (rhymes with Sheila). Daughter gets Layla a lot even when she’s told people her name is Lee-la herself. It’s an odd one isn’t it to assume tthat it’s Layla? So Sheila is pronounced Shayla? Anyway, I guess there’s more than one version of the name and different ways to pronounce it, but it had family significance for us, so we went with it.

Leila is definitely pronounced as Layla (eastern origin) but many people get it wrong and say Liela or Leela.

Your child will spend her life having to spell it out and having to explain how to pronounce it.

There’s no word I can think of in English with i before y, so it would be harder for people to pronounce because they can’t work it out phonetically. Your dd will also have to spell out the name every time she introduces herself. I think Leela is very pretty, and Leila too, and Lila, but I think Liyla would be a bit of a burden.

Liyla looks like a typo for Lilyia, which is very pretty.

IME, Lyla or Lila are lie-la. Leila is Lay-la or Lee-la. Lilla is lil-ah. Leela is always lee-lah - the safest bet! Grin

It sounds as if Leela is your safest option.

Liyla would obviously be pronounced Lie-la.

Leela is really the only spelling to get the pronunciation you want. Anything else will be open to interpretation at best, or pronounced in the most usual way (probably lie-la or lay-la)

I know a Leila pronounced Leela, but the Arabic name transcribed as Leila is pronounced Lie-la or Lay-la. It means Night.

Well. I've certainly learned from this thread that there are a fair number of people who don't research how to actually pronounce a name before they choose to use it.

OP please do spell it Leela, it's the only acceptable way.
