Tess...short for?

Picking out girls names and other half wants Theresa (which I hate), possible compromise on Tess, but is this a proper name, or more of a nickname kind of name. Also when I hear Tess I do tend to say of the durbevilles in my head...

Thoughts?

Tess is lovely on it's own.

I know a Theresa who is sometimes shortened to Tess, really don't like Theresa (that goes for the name and the person Wink).

Tess of the d'Urbervilles springs to mind, too. But I think it's OK as a stand-alone name. Tessa?

I really like it and the only Tess I've ever known it was her full name. I think it's "proper" :)
