Tess...short for?

Picking out girls names and other half wants Theresa (which I hate), possible compromise on Tess, but is this a proper name, or more of a nickname kind of name. Also when I hear Tess I do tend to say of the durbevilles in my head...

The official baptismal name of Tess Durbeyfield (in Tess of the D'Urbervilles) was Teresa. Just as her sister Liza Lu was actually christened Eliza Louise.

Tess is a winner it seems. I like Tessa also, but will it be annoying once they're at school etc and they have tessa on the register but get called tess?

Tessa. My mum was a Theresa, everyone called her Tessa. My DD is named Tessa after her and we call her Tess.

Isn't it short for Elizabeth. Like Tess Daly? Think Tess is from her middle name and her first name is actually Helen

I've taught two, both just called Tess. They were both quite clever and had great hair, if that helps.

I know a Tessera shortened to Tess, but not sure if it is a made up name to have a longer version!

Tess on its own is perfect.

Theresa is very old fashioned and Tessa sounds very 70s to me.

I know a tessie short for Anastasia (Greek family), though Anastasia is pronounced a bit like Anastesssia in their accent.

Apparently also sometimes used as short for Esther?

I've only ever used Tess as short for Tessa (which is obviously also a short form of Theresa/Teresa). I love it but can't use it - a friend is Tessa although 'officially' Teresa. She's never known as Teresa though, so don't see why you couldn't use Tess/Tessa as the full name.

I would go with Tessa, which is definitely a name in it's own right! I would assume Tess was short for Tessa. Both are lovely.
