Maya or Myah?

So here's a bit of a back story, myself and DP cannot agree on a name (we don't know the sex) however I have ALWAYS liked the name Maya, DP wasn't keen on it but is now coming around to the idea BUT he thinks it should be spelt Mya or Myah.

I really like it spelt Maya but should I just shut up and be thankful he's agreed on the name and let him choose the spelling?

MikeUniformMike Your response surprised me Shock My friend who moved to Wales (literally just over the English border) and embraced everything Welsh made a fuss of how she chose the Welsh variant of Mia for her daughters name as she felt that as her daughter was Welsh she should have a Welsh name Grin I don't think I'll have the heart to tell her what you said or what I discovered when I just googled the name...Welsh wasn't mentioned at all!

Thank you all for your lovely and informative comments.

I think I'll work on him about the spelling

Most people would think Mya or Myah was an attempt to spell Mia a bit differently.

Mia is a Northern European diminutive of Maria.

If you want the name pronounced like my = belonging to me + a, spell it Maia and tell everyone that's how it's pronounced, not may = the month + a.

What's more, Maia is a proper ancient Greek name, mother of Hermes.

I have a Maia, we preferred that spelling to Maya because we didn't want it pronounced May-a.

Squidgling · 06/09/2017 21:45

I would pronounce Maya may-a so if you want it pronounced my-a I would spell it Mya I think.

AdalindSchade · 06/09/2017 21:43

Maya can be pronounced like mya and looks so much better than either of your other options.

MikeUniformMike · 06/09/2017 21:43

Myah is NOT a Welsh name. Welsh is phonetic and Myah would be hard to say. It would be pronounced MUH-Aargh.

The Welsh for Mary, Mair is sometimes mispronounced as My-ah, but Mair is one syllable, a bit like My with an r on the end. (Think Myra without the a).

Myah is awful sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2017 21:41

I'd pronounce them both the same.

Maya is the nicer spelling IMO.

JWrecks · 06/09/2017 21:40

I'd pronounce Myah like a comic book villain... mmmmyaaaaaah!

Maya makes much more sense IMO and is a lovely name.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/09/2017 21:35

Depends on how you want to pronounciation you're wanting to use
If it's May-a then spell it Maya.
If its Mya spell it Myah.

MySecretToTell · 06/09/2017 21:35

To me those are two different names.
Myah I'd pronounce my-ah and Maya I'd pronounce May-a. I know a Myah and I believe it's a Welsh name but I could be wrong.

Both lovely names though Smile
