There was a girl in Home and Away (Australian TV soap) many years ago called Finlay wit nn Finn. I think she was Irene's Daughter.

Finola is Irish. At least, this is the English spelling of a traditional Irish name.

Don't worry about saying it reminds you of granola. I had a boy in the end (Finbar, also Irish).

I just wanted the OP to know respectable, traditional names do exist for a girl to be named Finn.

Yes, I really like Malcolm for a girl and I think Finola for a boy would be great, actually. There are lots of boys I know called things like Margot and Emily.

Vodka, I think you missed my sarcasm in the use of the word 'sullied'. The point is not that male names are precious per se, but that because of the lower status society accords girls, once a name is frequently used for girls it can no longer be used for boys.

Girls' names are never proposed for boys, just like girls' clothes are never acceptable for boys. Nobody ever says "What do you think of Rebecca for a boy?" The whole idea of A Boy Named Sue is that it's a cruel thing to do.

I see people taking the piss, but when 8 was pregnant with my last, I was determined to name him or her Finn. If a girl, she was going to be Finola.

Finley/Finn seems popular for girls in North America. Just like Quinn.

I prefer both for boys personally.

Suppose it "can" work don't particularly like it myself, I taught a girl called Bailey and the boy's used to constantly tell her you have a boy's name.

It's a bit depressing to think that there soon won't be any names left for boys to use as they'll all have been 'sullied' by being feminised. See threads passim on Aubrey, Rory etc. I guess then people will start making up ultra-masculine names like Block and Charge.

Re Finn as a middle name, I think it will just look like a family surname which is fine if that's the feel you're going for. It isn't a very pretty name really, and makes me think of fish and Finland/Finnish.

Yes you are correct, Irene Roberts daughter, her name is Finley Roberts and she had the nickname Finn! I was a big fan 🙈 And your right early 90s
We named our daughter Finley (not because of home and away might I add 😂) but i think the names quite feminine as the first I'd ever heard was a female

If you were having a boy, would you give him a middle name that was mostly used for girls?

I hate this trend for giving girls masculine names. It doesn't work the other way around, boys are not given feminine names. Some classic boys' names even get dismissed for being "wet". God forbid a boy should have a name that isn't manly Hmm
