I think I want to change DD's name...

AutumnName · 28/08/2017 20:11

DD was born on Halloween (2016) and I named her Autumn. I really like the look of it and the sound of it in my head. Since using it as a name, it doesn't seem to work as well as it did in my head? Lots of people don't get it. My mum actually makes jokes about it - "I can't wait to see my grandaughter who hasn't got a proper name" or she directly speaks to her and says "you might as well have been named 'Season'". No one else really says anything, but I feel like they think the same. I'm just really close to my mum, so she probably feels like she can say it.

OP, you should know that this thread has been lifted for a story on the Fail online.

Girlsworld92 · 30/08/2017 17:15

I think it's a lovely name. There's much much worse out there. If you love it stick to it. If you aren't sure nows the time to make the change.

RapunzelsRealMom · 30/08/2017 16:46

It's a lovely name. I can't believe your Mum, who you say you are close to, would behave this way

•	Autumn Jackson.
•	Autumn Kelly (born 1978), wife of Peter Phillips, grandson of Queen Elizabeth II.
•	Autumn Reeser (born 1980), American actress.
•	Autumn Sandeen, transgender activist and blogger.

Autumn Calabrese

Lots of famous Autumns so it's not THAT unusual

RestingButchFace · 30/08/2017 16:35

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad new but this thread is being quoted on the OK website. Lazy fucking journos!

Your mum had the children she was allowed to name. Now it's your turn.

If I had to name a little girl right now and I only had three names to choose from (violet, Matilda and Autumn), I'd choose Autumn in a heartbeat. I think it's lovely.

My mum hated some of the proposed names for my firstborn, and yes, I guess it did have an influence. It just meant I stopped discussing it with her.

I want to change ds2's middle name (didn't realise that you can change their names, relatively simply within x months of registering but we are well beyond that now). We were down to 3 choices and on our way to the registry office. One was a bit whacky, one was a bit bland and we both kinda liked it, one was a bit bland and he liked it lots and I really wasn't keen. We went for #2 and we both regret not having #1 (or hubby still says he'd prefer #3).

Binkywinx · 30/08/2017 15:41

At the end of the day it is your decision as she is your daughter. I think Autumn is a lovely name. No different to people calling their child Summer or even Winter. I completely understand where you are coming from with your mum as i am also close to mine but sometimes you need to say thats enough and she needs to accept your decision whatever you choose to do. I know one person in our family doesn't like my daughters name but its not down to them, everyone has their own opinion but its your choice. I hope you decide and dont let others influence you

Bubblesoup · 30/08/2017 13:27

I think your mum's opinion is making you believe that other people are also reacting to the name, but i bet theyre not! It's a beautiful name! Just remind yourself of all those other baby's names that are much more unique nowadays.

I think you need to tell your mum how her comments are making you feel. Ideally you then ignore her and put it out of your head. But i don't know if i could do it very easily either as my mum's opinion matters to me.

If you change it, will you always regret it?

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 30/08/2017 12:11

Autumn is a beautiful name. Maybe you should rename your mother. Start calling her Donald.

luluharry · 30/08/2017 11:38

ajandjjmum, I love this, tell your controlling nightmare of a mother that you are naming her after your MIL, because she is just such a beautiful person!

ajandjjmum · 30/08/2017 11:21

Tell your 'D'M that your thinking of changing it to your MIL's name.

I think Autumn is lovely.

Jenneth · 30/08/2017 11:13

Ignore ppl. You choose an amazing name. Your Mother should be supportive and if she can't be, call her on it. I love having a unique name, and yes my name is Jenneth, I love it. Don't allow other people's hangups make you insecure. Flowers

ToothTrauma · 30/08/2017 11:03

Oh no don't change it! Autumn is lovely. If your DD doesn't like it when she's older she can change it herself.

P.S. If I were named Violet and then found out I could have been named Autumn I'd be miffed Grin

GiraffesLikeToDance · 30/08/2017 10:58

Does your Mum approve of Violet or will she just start saying...like a colour?

Don't change it because of your Mum. Only change of you don't like it. It's not a terribly unusual name. I know 3 children called Autumn.

Nitsdrivingmebonkers · 30/08/2017 10:47

I have just changed my daughter's name and came on here to see if I was the most indecisive mum ever. And saw this thread!

If YOU don't like the name, change it. If you think it's the right name for her, keep it and ignore your mum. For what it's worth I changed mine from a classic lovely name, to one that is a bit more 'marmite' and has provoked some interesting reactions. But all that matters is that it's the right name for her and for me. Everyone else can and should keep their opinions to themselves. If they don't, it's they who are the problem, not your lovely daughter and her name.

Good luck!

GinevraFanshawe · 30/08/2017 09:32

OP please get a pet rat and call it Tilly. You couldn't possibly name your daughter after a rat!

mamasiz · 30/08/2017 09:26

I think Autumn is absolutely beautiful. Your mum needs a good talking to imho!

Mammadragon · 30/08/2017 09:22

Well I hope her mother sees it...she might get the message then 😏

Jenala · 30/08/2017 09:20

God it would be so easy to be one of these journalists. Copy and paste some stuff off a forum and head home.

NeverTwerkNaked · 30/08/2017 09:00

@AutumnName - just a heads up that this is now a "news story" on huff post so is popping up on my Facebook feed. They have lifted huge chunks of your posts verbatim

Seren0805 · 29/08/2017 18:03

Autumn is a beautiful name. Don't feel under pressure to change this name just because your mother hates it. If we all liked the same names life would be boring. Jokes starting with "I can't wait to see my granddaughter without a proper name" isn't a joke. This is so rude. Tell her, no matter how close to your mother you are. She should respect your decision and this isn't how she should address her granddaughter. Be strong!

finderkeeper · 29/08/2017 13:10

I know three Autumns and they're all lovely people. Lovely name op.

Piewraith · 29/08/2017 12:43

The name Autumn is perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with being named after a season. Summer is a very popular name.

As for being made fun of at school, how ridiculous. If her name was Tilly - kids could say Silly Billy Tilly or Tilly the Willy!

Your daughter will most likely be in a class with lots of unusual modern names and different culture names as well.

Btw I don't think Tilly/Matilda is a bad name, it's nice as well, just pointing out literally any name can be made fun of if you are determined.

LinaBo · 29/08/2017 12:32

Hope your mum doesn't read the huffington post, op. (Or that she does, in case you want her to see this...)

scarletpopapil · 29/08/2017 12:31

Autumn is lovely. It is relatively unusual (there's nothing wrong with that) and I think maybe people are checking 'like the season?' to make sure they've got it right, not in a critical way. But your mum's nasty comments have got to you so much that now it all sounds like criticism to you.

Your mum is wrong. Autumn is a proper name, and a very pretty one. Summer is another season name. April, May and June are all used as names. Seasons, months, any number of different objects are all used as girls' names. Would your mum be whining on that 'I might as well just call you Flower' if you'd named your daughter Rose?

If your mum is desperate to be in charge of picking someone's name then she can get a bloody dog!
