Libby? Do you immediately think of Elizabeth?

We like the name Libby if our bump turns out to be a girl but it appears to be a nickname/derivative of Elizabeth.

A very close family member is called Elizabeth.

Does it scream Elizabeth to you?

My niece is Libby and I've never really considered it short for anything. I love the name.

I know three Libbys (okay one of them is a cat) and all are short for Liberty.

lljkk Except that Libby is traditionally a shortening of Elizabeth. That's where "Libby" came from.

I also don't understand how people are getting Libby from Olivia. That's Liv/Livvy, surely?

I have a 22 month old called Libby Lois. Not short for anything. People do ask and we just say nope, not short for anything. We really loved it. And if you love a name and importantly agree on a name then grab it with both hands!!

I sometimes worry its too young a name for a grown up woman. But she can use her middle name if it's a massive issue!

Libby is one of many traditional diminutives of Elisabeth/Elizabeth. If I met a Libby (I know a small one) I'd therefore assume her full name was Elizabeth. I can see how Libby could be used for Liberty, but that's a pretty unusual name surely (especially compared to Elizabeth). I can't see how you'd get Libby from Olivia as there is no 'b' in there - Livvy would be the obvious diminutive instead.

So yes you could choose just Libby (although to me it is a little girl name really), but I'd have thought it quite likely that at least some of your family might think it was a tribute to your relative.

I would assume Liberty on BC. Olivia as 2nd guess.
Elizabeth turns into... Lisa, Beth, Betty, Lizzie. Not Libby.

I consider it a stand alone name.
I also absolutely love it- was keen for DD to have this name but DH wasn't keen so we chose something else. I hoped to convince him for baby 2 but he turned out to be a boy .

I would assume her full name was Elizabeth. I personally much prefer it as nn, it sounds quite informal and childlike as a stand alone name. The Olivias I know tend to get LIvvy rather than Libby.

Really Libby is so much nicer if it's short for something - Elizabeth, Olivia, anything really. To me it just sounds very child-like or at least informal despite being very sweet. As pp said nickname names are popular at the moment - but that trend will date.

I would think of Elizabeth but only because I do have a Libby who is an Elizabeth.

Before then I wouldn't have questioned whether a Libby was an Elizabeth shortened or just Libby.

I LOVE the name :)

Honestly, I would assume a Libby was Elizabeth on the BC, but I don't see anything wrong with it as a standalone. Nickname names are popular at the moment.

It is traditionally a shortening of Isabel and Elizabeth.

I'm an Elizabeth, so I would automatically assume that a Libby was "formally" Elizabeth. In the same way that I'd assume a Lizzy was.

But that's not really a big issue. If you like Libby alone, go for it.

Love the name Libby as my second daughter is Libby Rose , she's 3 in September & nobody has ever asked if its a nickname for Elizabeth, Olivia etc
