Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

Our baby boy arrived yesterday and we have announced his birth (obviously!) and that included his name - Edmund Jack.

My closest friend has outright messaged me and said Edward is much cooler... or I should swap the names around. She then knew I was a bit upset and just said she's joking and "will love him whatever his name" Sad

My mum has said "you can't call him that"... My dad made a comment about being back in the 1920s.

It's just constant and making me really quite sad. I thought people wouldn't be so rude if he was here...

Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

It will honestly make me consider using something else.

I love it! Congratulations on your new baby and on your great taste in names! Grin

Malaco · 26/08/2017 20:32

There's a clip on youtube called "Edmund" from an episode of Miranda where she is quite rude about the name. I'll leave you to decide whether to look it up!

LottieDoubtie · 26/08/2017 20:00

It's a great name OP have confidence in yourself!

OCSockOrphanage · 26/08/2017 19:57

My great uncle -- a lovely man according to my mum, although he died just before I was born, was Edmond. I know Millenial and Victorian Edwins and Edwards, who have all become Neds and Teds. It's okay, there are charming diminutives for the younger years, and then they are able to choose their nickname. Less good in Scotland perhaps, where Neds are a particular variant of hooligan...

firawla · 26/08/2017 19:56

I like it! It has more character than Edward and I like the narnia association

Lemondrop99 · 26/08/2017 19:54

Edmund is a great name. There's loads of Edwards around, this is a nice twist on it.

It's certainly not a crazy off the wall name that people - even if it's not their favourite name - are likely to actively detest.

I think people have been unforgivably rude to ruin your birth announcement when your son is already here!

Edmund has some lovely shortnings like Ed, Eddie, Ned and Ted.

If you and your DH love it, stick with it and be proud. You will NEVER find a name that everyone likes! You'll always get a mixed response, try not to let it get to you too much

catsarenice · 26/08/2017 19:53

The trouble is, at the moment everyone associates the name with something/someone else. However, give it a few days and the new association will be of your lovely, beautiful baby. The only important opinions are yours and your DP. It's one thing to give an opinion when people are thinking about names pre-birth but it's incredibly rude once the baby's been named. Many congratulations for your gorgeous baby Edmund. Flowers

ArcheryAnnie · 26/08/2017 19:44

Edmund is great - slightly Narnia, slightly medieval king.

Hang onto it and ignore the incredibly ride comments you've had!

nooka · 26/08/2017 19:43

I thought the general rule of thumb on names is be as rude as you like before the baby is born and names are being explored but when the baby is born and named only say nice things or nothing at all.

Edmund is not a very unusual name (top 1000), easily spelled and pronounced, and has a range of diminutives to choose from. I can't see why anyone would object to Edmund, and they can always use Ed or Eddie if they want to pretend that your baby is the more common and therefore presumably acceptable Edward. They will soon get used to it though, and once they associate the name with your lovely baby probably like it.

BifsWif · 26/08/2017 19:41

I'm sorry, but no I don't like it. I think it's quite boring and dated.

BUT it's not my opinion that matters. If you love it, and it suits your boy, ignore what anyone else thinks. Congratulations, enjoy your new baby!

milosmummy16 · 26/08/2017 19:41

You will regret changing it, it's your choice and you obviously both agreed on it when choosing it. Don't Change it!!!!! Can't believe anyone would make comments about a newborn baby name, i would be upset if that happened to me which is why we decide to keep a name secret until baby arrives as then people don't tend to make comments xxxx

Rockandrollwithit · 26/08/2017 19:40

I really like it, both Edmund and Edwin.

If you and your partner love the name, stick with it and ignore everyone else. Your friend is being really rude!

PokemonDont · 26/08/2017 19:40

I love it, personally. I've always disliked the named Edward (which sounds like a variation on "forward" and "backward" to me, not a name) and much prefer Edmund.

Don't let it get you down, people can be so weird about names but in the end it's none of their business and it's a lovely, traditional classic name. Congratulations on your perfect little boy!

Your mum and friend have been unforgivably rude and need telling if they want to name a baby they should have one themselves.
^ Yes to this too.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/08/2017 19:39

I think it's fine, I'm not an Edward fan so I prefer it. I prefer Edgar though :)

Trills · 26/08/2017 19:38

Edmund in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is unfairly maligned.

He was drugged. And, like, ten years old.

MrsPringles · 26/08/2017 19:38

But congratulations on your baby, if YOU like it then stick to it OP!

MrsPringles · 26/08/2017 19:37

No. Edmund elephant is what I immediately think of.

We watch too much peppa pig Blush

AprilShowers16 · 26/08/2017 19:36

I really like it. Edward is very popular at the moment so think it's a lovely alternative. I didn't think of blackadder but wonder if that's an association my parents generation would make, I do think of Narnia but he does redeem himself in the end

ScarletSienna · 26/08/2017 19:36

I really love it. Honestly. Edward is also nice but Edmund is lovely. It's not an out there name or one that lends itself to teasing. It's a perfectly fine name. Obviously it won't be to everyone's taste but that is quite different to it being a terrible choice.

I strongly dislike the name Arthur. The name is fine, that's just my taste.

I strong dislike Gaylord as a first name but that's quite different and probably more objectively a terrible name choice.

Congratulations!

thereareworsethingsicoulddo · 26/08/2017 19:35

Your friend's a dick. It's a perfectly nice 'normal' name.

daisydalrymple · 26/08/2017 19:34

Congratulations Flowers
The only question that is important here is whether you like the name or not. I'm assuming it was your favourite boy's name as you've named your newborn with it.

Your mum and friend have been unforgivably rude and need telling if they want to name a baby they should have one themselves.

hattymattie · 26/08/2017 19:31

I quite like it but it does make me think of Blackadder.

TerryTriceratops · 26/08/2017 19:29

It's a brilliant name, OP. Congratulations on your lovely new baby! My DS has a little friend called Edmund - they are 5. I met his Mum at a Rhyme Time at the library when they were babies. I made a beeline for her afterwards because I thought she must be so cool to have names her son Edmund! Smile

isittheholidaysyet · 26/08/2017 19:29

I like it.

far more than most of the old fashioned names which are popular now, Arthur, Albert, Edith, etc

LorLorr2 · 26/08/2017 19:29

Ed is very nice, if he doesn't like Edmund when he's older he can go with just Ed or Eddie? :)
