Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

Our baby boy arrived yesterday and we have announced his birth (obviously!) and that included his name - Edmund Jack.

My closest friend has outright messaged me and said Edward is much cooler... or I should swap the names around. She then knew I was a bit upset and just said she's joking and "will love him whatever his name" Sad

My mum has said "you can't call him that"... My dad made a comment about being back in the 1920s.

It's just constant and making me really quite sad. I thought people wouldn't be so rude if he was here...

Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

It will honestly make me consider using something else.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Its ok. Prefer Edison.

Beadieeye · 27/08/2017 00:00

I like it. It's old-fashioned and regal, neither of which are bad things in my book.
I don't see why Edward is considered trendy but Edmund isn't. People are silly.
I never have nicknames in mind for selecting names but the options for Edmund are worth noting: Ned, Eddie.
Congratulations on your little boy Smile

FredLovesWilma · 26/08/2017 23:31

Congratulations 😀

I don't mind it. It's a bit unusual which is no bad thing.

Donttouchthethings · 26/08/2017 22:52

Congratulations! Flowers

So sorry, but I really don't like the name. Edward is a goodun though.

pilates · 26/08/2017 22:45

Edmund Jack is a great name 👍and congratulations 💐

Floellabella · 26/08/2017 22:42

Genuinely I can't believe how rude people have been to you irl about your lovely new baby's name! As if you say that to someone who's just announced the name of their baby!

Edmund is a lovely name and nice that it's not too over popular yet still a strong solid name. Granny chic names are on trend anyway!

Stick to your guns and ignore the haters. You chose it because you liked it and it's none of anyone else's business. Maybe consider getting some new friends Hmm

MrsEricBana · 26/08/2017 22:24

I love it too! If you need any further convincing watch a couple of episodes of the latest series of Normal for Norfolk (iPlayer, BBC2) - the 20ish year old son is called Edmund and is just lovely. Stick to your guns!

CurlJunkie · 26/08/2017 22:19

Please don't change it. It's lovely to have a name that's different but not made up.

Keep saying the name over and over and soon you will realise that it's the only name for your lovely little baby.

Can't believe how rude some folk are, fancy saying those things once you've actually named your baby. Hmm

I have a friend with a son called Edmund, shortened to Mundy which I rather like.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 26/08/2017 21:41

I like it but more importantly, YOU like it. Please don't change your baby's name because of a couple of stupid comments, they will get used to it really quickly and it will just be a part of your little lad.

JoWithABow · 26/08/2017 21:40

Oh I so hope the Op comes back to see how many people love this name, and that she wasn't put off by the first few posts

spinassienne · 26/08/2017 21:39

Love it.

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 26/08/2017 21:34

I love it. More unusual than Edward and the Narnia/Blackadder connection doesn't bother me at all. Fab choice.

CheshireSplat · 26/08/2017 21:29

I usually RTFT before posting but am abroad so data is expensive but I'm reading The White Road by Edmund De Waal which I'm absolutely loving and yesterday I thought that Edmund would be a great name. However I have 2 DDs and no plans for any more so go for it OP. And I'd recommend the book.

LineysRun · 26/08/2017 21:25

Edmund is an awesome name. Historic, literary, modern, perfect.

NellieUnkles · 26/08/2017 21:23

Edmund in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is unfairly maligned.

He was drugged. And, like, ten years old.

This!

My associations with Edmund are either King Lear or Mansfield Park, and in the latter, while he's not the most dashing of Austen heroes, he's the only male character in MP apart from the heroine's brother who isn't a pompous windbag/serial seducer/greedy pig/shouty or dopey posh git, and he eventually gets his girl and doesn't swerve from What is Right. Grin

On balance, I like it. Much less ordinary than Edward.

And as others have said, your friend and mother are being incredibly rude to a new mother and her baby, who is, in fact, already here and called by this name. Their opinions are entirely irrelevant.

Personally, I hate the name George to me, it's a fat, podgy, puddingy, stolid kind of a name but (a) I don't go around telling the parents of baby Georges this and (b)whether it's to my taste or not is rightly irrelevant to the thousands of parents who do like ti.

MumBod · 26/08/2017 21:23

I think it's gorgeous.

Congratulations on your lovely new baby and his cool name.

Tean1 · 26/08/2017 21:11

I know an Edmund, he changed to being called Ed, I guess because he wasn't keen on his name.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/08/2017 21:11

Oh I love it! Such a gorgeous name! Congratulations!

BattleaxeGalactica · 26/08/2017 21:10

Congrats on your lovely baby, OP.

Your 'friend' is a complete caaah who should keep her beaky beak out. Don't let her mean spirited comments spoil these early days. Edmund is a lovely name. If there's anything to reconsider it's your 'friendship'.

Flybye · 26/08/2017 21:09

Edmund elephant is what I immediately think of

Same here but I do like the name. Also love Edwin and Edgold

belgiannun · 26/08/2017 21:07

It's a brilliant name op. Your baby, your choice. Who cares what anyone else thinks. I'd use it if I was having another, although sadly I'm a bit old now!

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 26/08/2017 21:05

19 years ago I got talked out of Noah for ds2 on the grounds that it was impossibly old fashioned and that he would get laughed at because no-one uses the name Noah.... now there seem to be hundreds of little Noahs running around

If you like it, go for it. It does rather remind me of Narnia but Edmund in Narnia came good and wasn't a bad child, just a very human one.

Congratulations on your baby

BewareOfTheToddler · 26/08/2017 21:02

I like it - I do think "Narnia" but that's not exactly a bad thing though if it was Aslan, that might be worth changing

Edmund Jack is a lovely name. Haven't met a little Edmund yet, know one in his 30s who goes by Ed but that's it.

Congratulations!
