Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

Our baby boy arrived yesterday and we have announced his birth (obviously!) and that included his name - Edmund Jack.

My closest friend has outright messaged me and said Edward is much cooler... or I should swap the names around. She then knew I was a bit upset and just said she's joking and "will love him whatever his name" Sad

My mum has said "you can't call him that"... My dad made a comment about being back in the 1920s.

It's just constant and making me really quite sad. I thought people wouldn't be so rude if he was here...

Be honest: do you like the name Edmund?

It will honestly make me consider using something else.

No, I don't like it. But why would that bother you? If you like it, keep it. I let myself be talked into choosing a name that wasn't my favourite. Over a decade later those friends are mostly gone from my life anyway, why did I prioritize pleasing them?

Your baby will grow into his name. People will like him and so they will like his name. And if he doesn't like it he can go by "Ed".

It's a great name, and as long as you don't call his little sister 'Lucy' Wink I can't see any reason not to stick to the name you love.

Your son... you get to choose his name... not other people.

Lovely choice, stick by your guns and don't let people bully you to change it!

Edmund is a super name, cool and classy.

While Edward is nice, it's not nearly as unusual or interesting as Edmund.

I do hope you don't let the comments from your rude relatives make you change your mind.

I really like it and it is one of my favourite boys names. Don't change the name of your new ds based on what a friend says.

I do quite like it and prefer it to Edward, it's certainly less common (common as in commonly found, not lower class). To me if it's associated with any era it would be the middle ages, dashing knights in armour etc., don't know what your dad is on about with his 1920s comment!

Some people just can't deal with anything slightly unusual. They lack imagination.

Dh is Edmund and I think it's great - he has lots of other 'ed' friends but they're all Edwards

Much cooler than Edward as it's much rarer.

If you like it then thats what matters. I would never be so rude as to give a negative opinion on a name i hadnt been asked about.
As you've asked I do find it a bit insipid. But his friends will all call him Ed Im sure and Jack is lovely. The combination of the two works well :)

Definitely stick with it. You'll probably always regret it if you don't. No matter what you choose someone somewhere will have an opinion. Too popular, to unusual, someone they dislike with the name etc.

I expect a few tactless remarks from the grandparents but a friend has no business being so free with their opinion!

Nothing at all wrong with Edmund. Eddie is lovely. Not keen on Ned and definitely don't use Ned if you have any Scottish connections, 'ned' is used there as 'chav' is used in England.

I like it very much.

It's not so familiar as Edward. They will get used to it.

I remember my little cousin being named Sam and thinking it was a real old man's name!
