Is Sophie too popular?

I have a sophie and she is wonderful so I am biased :) it means wisdom and she certainly lives up to her name, always been very inquisitive and full of facts!

My daughters Sophie (such a beautiful classical /timeless name) she's 4. She's the only one in her nursery class. If you like it use it. I have a Joshua and Joseph which again are popular names there's three Joseph's in one class but I choose a name the reflected what I liked not if others had the same name. Btw I have an uncommon name and hate it!

Not that it matters. Choose what you like.

But (from what I've seen/heard) there are way fewer Sophias than Sophies.

I think you'll find that Sophia is very popular.

I do love the name Sophie although if I have a DD in future I'd probably go for Sophia as it's (marginally) slightly more unusual by comparison.

I have a name that was the most common for my year group. I hated it, always having to say both names on the phone for example.

However, choosing a less popular name is no guarantee of avoiding this anyway - because of my experience I vetoed any top 10 name for my DD and think her name was 18 the year prior to her birth. The next year it went to number 1 so essentially if you love the name Sophie, use it regardless. It's a beautiful name and popular for a reason.

When DS came along I'd learnt my lesson and avoided any name in the top 100 just to avoid the same thing happening again, but that's just personal preference

I know a baby Sophie and unfortunately I too thought it was really boring compared to her siblings. It's a bit like Jack to me, probably not as common as some names but just feels a bit blah.

I've a toddler Sophie but I haven't heard many other Sophie's at toddler groups.

DD2 does have a Sophie in her class, and I know one other, (who is 4.)

Both DC have a Sophia in their class, and we know several others - I would say that is the more popular name, and Sophie a bit more unusual, particularly in that age group.

Lovely name, I would go for it, and not worry about duplication - my eldest has two girls called Niamh in her class, which I wouldn't have classed as a massively popular name, it's not just those with popular names that end up being Sarah B, or whatever.

I do like the name though, my other friend is Sofia and I prefer that spelling (she's not British though).

A friend of mine had a baby the other day called Sophie and I'm sorry to say that my first thought was 'what a boring name'... I didn't say that to her obviously but there are loads of Sophies and Sophia's round here.

I only know of one Sophie - my niece. She's 15 and beautiful!
I have 2 ds's and neither of them have a Sophie in their year at school.
I don't know any adult Sophie's either.

Sophie/Sofia and other variants added together has been the 'true' number one name (it's been used more than Isabel/variants since about 2011).

So yes, I think it's very likely you'll encounter a few others. But, just like pps have said, even when a name is given so frequently, it'll be only a few.

I know a couple of Sophies in my DD's age group (early twenties). I wouldn't have thought it was so popular now for little girls though. I actually prefer it to the currently very popular Sophia (for little ones), although I like that too.

Yes it has been very popular over recent decades, but so what? It's a lovely, lovely name, so I'd say go for it!

Love it and always have. I only know only one young Sophie, aged 6 or 7 years. Not a fan of Sophia at all, but this seems more popular at the moment.

I know heaps born about 10-20 years ago. However there aren't as many little Sophies anymore.

Alice seems more classic and timeless to me. Sophie must have been in the top 10 for a number of years recently. Don't think Alice has ever been so popular?

This is a bit different, my 5 year old cat is called Sophie. I named her as Sophie was the most pretty, girliest name I could think of. I am now slightly gutted I didn't save the name for a potential daughter. Instead my baby girl who is due in November will be called Beatrice.

I have a 5 month old Sophie. We loved the name immediately, we didn't know if we were having a girl or boy. When she was born she was a Sophie no questions. I didn't realise it was so popular but I only know one Sophie and she is in her mid twenties. I suppose it depends where you live.
I love the name. Its timeless. When we have a second baby if we have a girl we like Alice which is similarly timeless IMO
