Something I've been idly musing on........

If someone tells you what they are thinking of naming their baby and you think they might have missed a downside do you tell them? Some people on another thread were saying "absolutely not", but surely you would want to know?

As a example, a friend of mine was thinking of calling her first baby Minnie. Where we live -and where the child was very likely going to go to school- Minnie is a very commonly used word for a little girl's genitals. I told her, and she changed her mind. Should I have just let her go ahead and find out later? I know someone whose initials are ASS. Apparently his parents didn't notice until too late. If you had, would you have mentioned it?

If it's really commonly used to mean vulva where you live, then I would probably have said something, yes. It's all in how you say it though, as pps have said. "You can't do THAT to a baby" for example; probably unnecessary. A gentle "You know that people call their vulvas their Minnies here?" totally fine.

Pointing out something obvious that the parents may have missed and doing it in a kind way is fine imo. A name being the exact same word as the word commonly used for genetalia is quite a glaring issue.

But yes, willy, dick and fanny are still used, (not by many parents of babies named today admittedly). Doesn't will.i.am call himself willy sometimes? It might not bother some people as much as you think.

I already said on the other thread, but Millie means female 'chav' where I'm from. It was very widely used when I lived there, but that was a long while ago now! Anyway, I knew a girl named Millie, who would now be a woman in her thirties. Nobody really commented tbh. I wouldn't be surprised or make any comments if a friend from there said they were going to name their DD Millie. I'd assume they knew and didn't mind too much.

Out of interest. How did your friend react when you told her?

Still a beautiful name Rabaria. 💜

rabaria · 21/08/2017 19:55

Oyster 😀

rabaria · 21/08/2017 19:54

Yes to Lana. But it's a beautiful name, and we don't ( and are highly unlikely ever to) live in an English- speaking country. Our English friends, I assume, have figured we know the backwards spelling so have refrained from commenting

rainbowterrier · 21/08/2017 19:51

Lana - Anal?

Shalalalalala · 21/08/2017 18:07

It's not Hazel is it Rabaria? Grin

Just realised I didn't answer the question. Yes, I'd rather be aware in case I missed something, and then make an informed decision. But my general atttitude is that probably most names, derivatives or nicknames are likely to have a rude connotation, accidental or not, somewhere along the road.

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2017 18:06

Ghts?

rabaria · 21/08/2017 17:59

In our case it's what her name spells out backwards

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2017 17:42

What's the potential downside of the name sthg? Aside from it being unpronounceable and not a name obvs.

Shalalalalala · 21/08/2017 17:27

In our family Minnie = vulva in a child-friendly way, but doesn't bother me that it's also a name, just like Willy and Dick (and Fanny, for that matter).

People can do whatever they want with names to make them sound rude or have a rude connotation, and you can't stop it!

rabaria · 21/08/2017 17:10

I named my second child sthg that is often pointed out on mumsnet as having a potential downside, although all agree it's a beautiful name :) None of my friend's mentioned it - I assume they realized that we are aware of the downside and thought it through. It's a pretty obvious downside, so wouldn't have been offended at all if mentioned, but glad that people either didn't think of it or realized we already had done

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2017 17:07

I think you should say whatever it takes to prevent a child being saddled with Minnie.

I agree, you need to tell them if it's going to be embarrassing or hard to live with but it is how you say it as ultimately it's their decision.

Choccyhobnob · 21/08/2017 12:52

I think I would have to say something nicely too. I also know of a little girl called Minnie and it makes me cringe as that's what my siblings and I called our girl bits too!

ImDoingLaundry · 21/08/2017 11:02

Sorry, not sure why it posted twice!

ImDoingLaundry · 21/08/2017 11:02

I think if its potentially rude you should definitely tell them. If not, cue years of name calling in the playground.

My initials are BJ. Nobody told my parents it means blow job, as a child they used to shout "Hurry up BJ" in the street/supermarket if ever I was dawdling behind them.

Thankfully I've got thick skin and can laugh about it, I told my parents a few years ago and they're still mortified lol.

I think it depends how you tell them.
"Did you realise thits what alto of people use top describe lady bits round here?" vs "OMG you're gonna name your daughter after a vagina, you do know its going to be your fault when she's bullied" for example
"Alex Simon Smith... Interesting initials..." vs "hahaha you're calling hon an ass. I vet all the Jo dos at school will make him the butt of their jokes hahaha he's so gonna get beaten up and hate you. I bet you'll be on mn in 10 years when he asks for a name change"
"That's certainly original" vs "Jesus dud you just put a random group of letters together? That's so chavvy"
