Name Nerds: Assemble! ONS Baby Names 2016 predictions

Although I can't find an exact publication date, the ONS name data for 2016 is due to be published soon.

Chime in here with your predictions for the climbers and those that will fall.

Exactly! Thanks for explaining that. Which do you think is a more accurate representation of popularity? I guess with the example of Zoe, is it that Zoe, spelt like that, is the 83rd most popular girls' name? Would you have to look at the top 1000 to see how popular the other spellings are?

I'm also interested in how they decide a name is an alternative spelling- obviously for things like Zoe/Zoey lily/Lilly it's obvious, but there must be 'names' parents think of which aren't variants of a name if that makes sense?!

I'm predicting gains for:

Boys - Freddie, Theo, Elliot/Elliott, Lewis, Oliver

Girls - Aria, Isla, Beatrix

early Are you looking at the name Zoe as an example? The number in brackets is its rank in the official ONS statistics. Zoe is lower down in the BBN combined spellings because other names have pushed it further down. For example, Lily is no 13 in the ONS stats but once you combine Lily with every Lillie and Lilly AND with all of the double-barrelled Lily-May, Lily-Mae, Lily-Rose etc it jumps to no 2 and pushes other names down. Maya and Darcey also make very big gains once you combine the alternative spellings.

I'm being silly, but I don't understand the combined spelling thing? So say a name is ranked 100, but higher in brackets, what does that exactly mean?

Issac will move up. I seem to know so many brothers that are a combination of Isaac, Noah and Theo.

I don't know where Evelyn was before but it seems very popular around here at the moment.

I think Ezra will have entered the top 100, if not this year definitely next.

I think Theo will move up but then I'm not sure how many of them are Theodore.

I also think with combined spellings Aria/Arya and Anaya/Aniyah/Aniya/Anaiah will too. I've met a lot of them!

Is Bob/Bobby really on the up? I haven't come across any or seen it suggested much as a name here.

Agree that Teddy variations and Arthur will have risen

Violet and Mila will have risen up the girl chart

I think Sophia will significantly rise, will be 1 in a year or two. Also think 'granny chic' names - Violet, Ivy, Pearl, Florence, Iris and Beatrice will have risen. Isla is popular where I live but I think it went down slightly last year.

Boys wise, I think Oliver will remain the statistical number 1 for boys. I think Alexander will have risen.

I agree Teddy/Ted/Theo are very popular but it will be interesting to see how this is reflected in the stats given that many Teddy/Teds will be registered as Edward and Theo is being used much more as a stand alone name rather than a diminutive of Theodore but many will choose the latter.

Predict big rises for Freddie and Theo(dore) for boys.

All girls appear to be called Mia/Mya/Maia or Amelie/Emily so am sure they will be strong contenders.

Have yet to meet an Olivia or an Isla in real life
