Maybe this has been done to death on here, but I've just seen it described on another thread as 'chavvy' Hmm

I adore the name and would probably choose it for a boy if I am lucky enough to have another. I know that it has become quite popular, but funnily enough I don't know any.

Thoughts?

I absolutely love Noah, it's my favourite boy's name. I've also seen it described as 'chavvy' which is just ridiculous.

Noah's lovely, and although it's had a recent surge in popularity so will probably 'date', I don't see this being such a big problem for this generation as ours. Simply because there is a much wider range of names being used than for example when I was at school and there were 2 Janes, 3 Louises and a Claire to every class. 'Popular' names are less popular than they used to be and I only know of 1 Noah, who is 4 I think. Btw I pronounce Noam as 'No-um' but I've no idea if it's right (only ever used it in ref to Noam Chomsky)!

I'm always saying it on here, but I can't stand hearing names referred to as 'chavvy'. It's such a nasty term.

As for Noah, personally I don't like it at all but loads of people clearly do as it's very popular.

I think it's classless and a fine name. It's not number one in the UK (that's Oliver and has been for a few years now) but it is in the top 10 so it's quite popular. But, so?

Ah, just had a quick Google and I don't think Noam is in the Bible as such. Apparently it's the male form of Naomi though, which is in there.

I'd consider Noam to be more like Hebrew names such as Chaim rather than Old Testament names.

I'd say No-am too. Pretty sure it is Biblical and while I agree it sounds like quite a religious choice, the same would probably have been said of Noah, Judah, Elijah etc. 20 years ago and now those are all fairly commonplace. Sorry for the tangent OP, just musing really...

I think Noam can be pronounced No-um or Gnome. Noam isn't biblical is it? I'd assume a Noam came from a Jewish family and would think it a little unusual if a non Jewish couple plumped for it.

I'm not so keen.
It sounds like, 'Know her' in a Yorkshire accent, as many people drop the 'h.'
As in, 'Do you know her/Noah?'

I would say No-am (like Noam Chomsky). Definitely wouldn't think of him as Gnome Chomsky. It's a great suggestion. Noah is incredibly common these days (nice name though).

How do you pronounce Noam Jooni?

Not "chavvy" in the least but yes, very very popular right now. I know at least 4, all under 5. It is a nice name though, I can definitely see the appeal.

Out of interest, what do people think of Noam? I'm surprised it's not surged in popularity too as people look for something similar but less popular. I think it's as nice if not nicer than Noah.

It's a beautiful name, I have a 9 year old Noah myself! I love Hebrew names and it was still quite unusual when I had him. I wanted to call ds2 Jude, but exdh wouldn't have it.

I don't know any Noahs older than 20 or so, but all the Noahs I do know are lovely. It's a really nice name.

I don't think Noah is 'chavvy', but I do tend to think "oh no, not another one" when I hear it.

I love it and would be a serious contender if I was to have a boy.

I know a lot of people saying it's popular but that perhaps depends on your location? Where I am I have only met 1 Noah, and I have 3 kids at school plus various clubs, take my 2 nephews to their clubs and toddlers and have lots of friends having babies just now.

Actually I was talking to my Dad the other day and he said 'you'll never believe what X and X called their son.......NOAH! Can you believe that? How unusual!'. He was most surprised when I told him there were loads of little Noahs around these days.

But then, my Dad expects all boys to be called Neil. Grin
