DP and I are in a bit of a disagreement at the moment about how you pronounce this name.

Could the kind Mumsnetters settle this disagreement once and for all?

I pronounce it Loch-lan. DP pronounces Lach-lan.

Judging by this thread, I think I've won this one Grin

The "ch" should be pronounced the same way Scots would pronounce it.
So absolutely not like "ck".

(Scottish person here)

I've heard the first syllable pronounced with either an "O" or Ah" sound but the end "ch" should definitely be spoken in the velar fricative (ooh get me).

Disclaimer - I only know it's called velar fricative because I regularly get annoyed at native Scots who don't bother pronouncing it properly!

Lock-Ln

DownUdderer · 28/07/2017 12:17

Massively popular here in oz and they all get called Locky

Bluerose27 · 28/07/2017 12:16

Loch Lin

cushioncovers · 28/07/2017 12:11

Not Scottish by the way.

cushioncovers · 28/07/2017 12:10

Lock. Lin

My opinion, Glow. For quite the opposite reasons of having a Sir Tiger Blu.
It's a public forum.
My DS' name (a good solid Scottish name imo) takes a tashing on here sometimes too.

Lock Lan.
How is it 'try hard' as a name TheScottishPlay?! Definitely not - it's not Sir Tiger Blu...
Lachlan is a lovely name.

TheScottishPlay · 28/07/2017 11:34

I'm Scottish so pronounce the 'ch' sound, so Lach-lan.
It's a bit 'try hard' as a name tbough.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 28/07/2017 11:33

Lach-lan (the ch at back of throat like loch)

Scottish

peg90 · 28/07/2017 11:33

Lach-lan

supersix · 28/07/2017 11:33

I have one. His name is spelt Lachlan but with our Irish accent it is pronounced Lock-lan. I know Scottish pronunciations are more Lack-lan though. Either is fine. Depends on accent.

HappyAxolotl · 28/07/2017 11:33

Loch-lan.
