Opinions on the name Seren

I'm aware this is quite a popular name in Wales (I'm half Welsh and was born there but we live in the north of England now) but I don't know any girls called Seren in real life. I'm not sure it'll actually work with our surname, but it's the only name my DH and I have remotely agreed on yet.

Any thoughts? If you heard this would you be like "oh god not another Seren" or think it was weird?

I'd pronounce it to rhyme with heron but is it meant to sound more like the 'seren' in serenity? I'd hate to pick a name and not pronounce it as it is in its home country.

Eleri, Bethan and Ffion sound like women in their 50s. Pretty names but they belong to the same generation as Sarah, Clare and Lisa, but with the added bonus of being likely to be mispronounced.

The (mis)pronunciation I heard was Suh-RENN not Suh-RUN.
It made made me think of 'Sir N'. I hope Seralen doesn't become a name.
It is SERR-en. I still don't like it.

It is a beautiful name but v popular round my way (left leaning middle class inner city area). There are 2 in my dd's class. And several others dotted through the school.

Hi Accrual, having got my head round it and accepting that it would be probably be pronounced as Serrun (rhymes with Derren), I heard someone say it as Suh-RUN. Yuk. Sorry.

I quite like Deryn (welsh colloquial for bird) which is pronounced Derrin. It's a bit like Celyn (Kellin) in that it should be a boy's name but works better as a girl's name.

I prefer Sophie.

My dd2 is called Seren. We live in Northumberland. No one has ever had difficulty pronouncing or spelling it.

I love the name, obviously!

MikeUniformedMike I read that thread earlier - this is about as unusual or as Welsh a name as I'd ever consider. I did want a range of views because it doesn't seem a difficult name to me but I've grown up with Welsh family and Welsh speakers (although I'm not one myself) so it feels intuitive to spell and pronounce. Perhaps I'd be dooming my child to a lifetime of correcting the spelling and pronounciation of her name. But tbh my not-particularly-unusual English name is often mispronunced and regularly misspelled, to the extent that I have a fake name for ordering taxis and pizzas, so that can happen with loads of names.

Anyway, it's still on the list for consideration Smile

I loved this name, but then heard the news report of the sarin gas attack in Syria, heard it as seren gas and went off it!

Born and raised in Wales, 99% of my friends were called seren haha! It means star in welsh if you didn't know. I love it, even knowing so many serens, I don't think I can ever get bored of it!

As soon as I saw it I thought 'oh god' it is mentioned every. Single. Time. Someone asks for advice about welsh names.

I believe it may be top 10 in Wales when the ons stats are broken down but if you're not in Wales it's unlikely to be common
