Why the fashion for stupid names.

Can someone please explain to me why on earth there is the need to saddle your poor children with a stupid name which will affect them for the rest of their life.

Is there a competition somewhere to have the most ridiculous thing that can be thought of.....why???

I met a little boy called Cosmo Tiger the other day. All for unusual names, but would I like to introduce myself as that to new people? No way, and I don't think the majority of adults would appreciate being called that either.

so...you do one stupid thing at school and the whole school instantly knows it's you-do you see what i mean? whereas if you have a more common name it can be 'some kid called chris..'

i have a name that was very unusual while i was growing up and even now certainly isn't common and do you know what? It was fucking burden.
Everyone instantly knows who you are.
I was teased mercilessly at school-it rhymes wonderfully.

I have had comments from men in nightclubs that made me go Hmm
I had a maths teacher who for a whole year called me synonyms for my name.
I have people asking if it's short for another more common name etc etc

When i had my children i was determined that they were going to have names that other children had. I wanted them to be unique by value of just being who they are not because of their bloody stupid name .
Let's not forget too....personalised pencils.....

There is a Je-t'aime in my nieces class. I don't think many of the kids could speak French so have never batted an eyelid. My eyebrows were in my hair. My Dad's friend is Ruby middle name Slippers. Was cute maybe when she was little but she's 14 now and not amused.

Nothing wrong with an unusual name but changing the spelling of an existing name to be unique only serves to make you look uneducated.
Also I really wish people would think about what they're pairing the Christian name with if your surname is King don't call your child Joe or Lee for example and if your surnames Hoare (pronounced whore just for clarity) under no circumstances call your daughter Robin. Yes there is a poor child walking around called Robin Hoare.

I had two Armani's in the same class a few years ago, one boy and one girl. I THINK the girl had an e on the end. Year 10, so this isnt a new fangled thing...

Given we've only had standardised spelling for words for a few hundred years, it's probably the case that most 'usual' names have been spelt all sorts of different ways in the past.

The only baby name I have come across recently which made me smile is John. Baby John is in my ds's gymnastics class along with Fifi, Fabien, Percy, Sebastian, Ralph etc. John really stands out!

Most unique names I have heard (I work in education) are Beyonce, McFred, Thanx and Dulce. All Year 9 students.

Doubt it. Phonics is the traditional way of teaching decoding/spelling (apart from a brief interlude in the late 20th century). The timelines just don't map.
