Harri or Ranulph?

First baby. He's two days old and we can't pick a name.

I think we are down to two

Harri (surprisingly my Englishman husband likes the Welsh spelling - we currently live in Wales but likely to move about a bit)

Or

Ranulph

The pros to Harri is that he kind of looks like a Harri and my husband had championed it from the start. I like it but just feel is terribly popular at the moment - oh like ANOTHER Harri.

Ranulph is a name we both like as we've gone along. It's hard to imagine it as a baby name though I think teen/man it's great. I guess it would go to Ran as a nickname which is fine.

What do we do mumsnetters?

What do you think of these two names?

Harris gets my vote, unless you are very posh then Ranulph is OK

Taliesin is my fave welsh name :) and Tal is lovely.

You have to go with the name that feels right for your baby. Maybe the next one will look more like a Ranulph:)

You are going to kill me. We've gone with a different name! He was Ranulph for an hour but it just didn't feel right for him. I want it to as I love it. But it made me feel edgey once we said that was it between us.

As my husband liked the sound of Harri/harry so much I though about the sounds of names. I remembered my friends lovely son Tally.

My husband really likes it too.

So...
Taliesin it is. Should appeal to the Welsh name fabs on here :)

Tal or Tally nn.

I really appreciate everyone's contribution and helping me work this through. I wanted to update so you could read the outcome of you wanted to know.

Or Meredydd.

I don't really think randy is a word kids use nowadays so I don't think it will become a nickname IMO

Just checked with my cousin by text, and he said he's only called "Rando" because he was a bit random in school - into eccentric things. So I don't think that's a typical nickname for Ranulph. And he's never been called Randy!

I don't think so OP. There's no D in Ranulph so it's a bit of a stretch. Willy is much more likely for William but people call their kids William all the time

I quite like Harri but I think that if he is a teenager who no longer lives in Wales, he's quite likely not to thank you for the spelling and it's entirely possible he'd just change it anyway. It also could be mistaken for a female version, or a variation of the Indian spelling - Hari.
Ranulph is v cool.

Harri is the girls version.

Ranulph definitely, nn Ran I like too. If you go with Harri, once you move from Wales, people may assume he's a girl if they see it written down, nn for Harriet, or spell it Harry.

I have a cousin ranulph and it is really cool. He's known as Ran, Rando, or Nulfi depending on who's talking.
