I just threw a baby name book across the room - argh!

Stupid baby name book, where the boy section is missing one syllable names.

Well... there are a few that are short for something (Matt, Nick), which I dislike on their own, and having a longer name on BC defeats the purpose.

And a few more that are just... not very dashing interesting.

Oh and others that don't fit our other essential criteria - which is not ending with the letter L and being able to work okay in both France and Ireland as well as UK.

Indulge me for a moment that the issue is my baby name book and not our (unfortunately, wholly necessary) criteria, alright?! Any ideas?

Most of the names I immediately thought of have been mentioned. Niall to me has only one syllable but I have always pronounced it Neal.
Conn is nicer than Connor
Mose or Moss are nice and work in both countries I think.

Thanks all - I have to get to an end of term primary school violin concert now. These suggestions will help keep a smile on my face through the screeching.

I wasn't really considering calling my child Drake. And DH's a bit gullible, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't fall for me wanting to call him Wind or Boot. Grin

Just wondering, because the name has a contemporaneous association with him, and he's a certain - ahem- kind of fellow.

I'd avoid giving my son the same name as a misogynistic fuckwit

Right; your criteria for normal names is coming up blank so I think we need to go a little off-piste and veer into arty/hippy/more unusual names. I give you:
Oak
Beach
Beech
Sea
Ash
Wind
Green
Boot
Breathe
Race
Ace
Sun

Tell Lovely if he won't let you have Beau you're picking one of these..chortle

What about Huw rather than Hugh? Also you could claim it stands for 'hanything you want'.
