Thoughts on names

We are finding this naming business very difficult - I struggle to name a rescue kitten let alone a human being! 😂

I was just wondering what you lovely people of mumsnet think of our names so far and whether you have any suggestions?

For a boy we have it down to three names:

Chester
Bobby
Or Teddy

For a girl we are stuck. We currently like:

Effie (not shortened for anything, just Effie)
Piper
Or Betsy

We like names that are a bit different but not so out there that he/she is going to get picked on as they grow up! Any suggestions or thoughts on these names would be greatly received as I don't want to share with RL friends or family :) x

Not a fan of Chester, but all the others I like.

Squ1ggle · 16/07/2017 18:46

Bobby is cute and I like Betsy. Effie just reminds me of the woman from the hunger games

ConstanceCraving · 16/07/2017 19:24

I like Chester and Piper. Effie is awful, sorry. Betsy is a bit sickly for my liking. Not keen on Bobby or Teddy. But I love Robert and Edward.

Wilhelminaaa · 16/07/2017 19:56

I like Bobby & Piper as a set, and Chester & Effie.

SuperBeagle · 16/07/2017 19:59

Robert nn Bobby and Piper.

Bobby alone is awful though. Chester and Teddy are dire too, as is Betsy when not short for Elizabeth.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/07/2017 20:02

I really like Chester, the other two are a big toddlerish.
Betsy is sweet.

Rhubarbtart9 · 16/07/2017 20:03

Teddy and betsy. Adore them!

Jooni · 16/07/2017 20:08

All fine, my favourites are probably Teddy and Effie (though both feel a bit cutesy unless short for something) and my least favourites are Bobby and Betsy.

How about:

Kester
Dexter
Roscoe
Arlo
Otto
Monty

Betsan
Fifer
Mamie
Kitty
Polly
Luna

Seekingmiracles · 16/07/2017 20:12

I quite like them all. Chester and Piper my faves. I quite like Bobbi for a girl - used to love Home and Away waaaay back when!

I really don't get how names can be 'dire' unless they're short for something. Surely if you think they're dire, they're dire regardless.
If you like the OP, there really is no need to use a long version for the bc, just use what you like.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/07/2017 20:13

Bobby and Teddy are both adorable.
But perhaps too cutesy for a teenager.
However there's nothing stopping them from dropping the ee sound and just becoming Ted or Bob.
I irrationality dislike Chester. I think people will automatically think. Well we know what you got up to there.Grin.
Also despise Effie.
Betsy and Piper are both gorgeous.
Think I'd go for Teddy for a boy
and Betsy for a girl.
Are you going to put full names on the BC

Ropsleybunny · 16/07/2017 20:14

Really sorry, I can't stand any of them, I love Edward though.

228agreenend · 16/07/2017 20:15

Never heard of Effie before. Bobby and Teddy are nn for me (Robert and Edward). Quite like Betsy. Not keen on Chester.

Other similar names:
Esme
Dulcie
Annie
Robyn
Polly

Joel
Connor
Jude
Josiah
Curtis
Kyle

PoppyPopcorn · 16/07/2017 20:16

Cute and adorable names are fine for preschoolers, terrible on adults. Robert, Edward and Elizabeth - great. Use the "baby" nickname if you must but it gives them the option of leaving the cutesy and twee name in their childhood.

GreenTulips · 16/07/2017 20:25

Bess
Jenna
Kitty
Elsie

Flynn / Finn
Marty
Greg
Scott

bridgetreilly · 16/07/2017 20:52

In order of preference:
Teddy (or maybe Ted, nn Teddy?)
Bobby (same, maybe Bob, nn Bobby)
Chester

For the first two, I think it's important to consider that you're naming a person, not just a baby.

Again in order:
Betsy (I really like this)
Piper and Effie (don't like either)

Other ideas:
Robin
Gus
Bertie
David (Davy)
Ben

Kitty
Poppy
Sally
Gracie
Bess (Bessie)
Daisy
Maisie
Nell
Linnet

Sophronia · 16/07/2017 23:38

I like Bobby and Betsy, but would put Robert and Elizabeth on the bc.

fannyanddick · 16/07/2017 23:45

I like Bobby and love Teddy. Though I would have it as short for Theodore. Not a big fan of Effie though maybe it's a grower. Piper bit American and Betsy a bit twee but both nice enough.

Seekingmiracles · 17/07/2017 16:11

My BIL is a Robert... know as Robert as a child. Then it progressed to Rob. Then in early twentys Bobby, now Bob. It's a load of rubbish that Bobby/Teddy/Betsy etc are too twee for adults. People grow with their name.
I personally think a baby called Robert is worse than an adult called Bobby
Hmm

Bubbaboo2 · 17/07/2017 19:22

I have an Effie-so obviously I love this one.I find it pretty and a sunny name and suits my daughter down to the ground. I also love Piper!
Not so keen on Betsy though but this is because I know an annoying little dog called this.
If you're looking for unusual avoid Teddy! I literally know about 8!! I really like Chester though-it seems very 'proper'
