Rex

I have a Rex! Am so glad some of the few on here who insist its a dogs name have also been revealed to have pretty shockingly poor taste in the names they do actually like, which kind of proves the point.
No name is universally loved. There are so many on here professing their love for it. There was a lot of of love for it when I had DS (glad so many of my friends have taste ) and he is a cool, quirky, gorgeous boy who completely suits his name, yet stands apart from the many William's and Oliver's in his nursery known as "William O...Oliver S..." while he's just Rex, and awesome.

Wow itds really not an out there name at all. It's just a normal name. I don't get all the fuss. At the worst someone might think dogs name for a split second. Same way I do when i hear bella or milly. It's really not a big deal.

I'd think dogs name. Or possibly dinosaur.

I don't like it as a name regardless but would never say it to a person who chose it.

Tiggy is a nickname, not actually on the birth certificate. No problem with that.

I have 4 children, all but one of their names probably hated on Mumsnet. Couldn't care less!

Exactly Waitrose, and love Tiggy. Imagine Tiggy and Rex...but think the cat and dog associations might just be too much for poor WhatToDoAboutThis2017

Haha my Daughter's name is shortened to Tiggy. Do I care it's a common name for cats? Literally not a second of my life wasted worrying about it, nope.
Rex is a great name!

Jane dates back to the 17th century, and Kai is from the Roman era (comes from Gaius).

Macy is a lot newer, and on its own I don't really like it, but I think it flows well as Macy May.

Haha if those are names whattodo... likes it's clearly not worth taking her bizarrely nasty comments on this superb name into account... Jane, Kai and Macy- May?? Really. But a name that's been used as a name for homosapians for over 200years not a real name then?

I think the dog thing doesn't occur to the younger generations

Rex is more associated to a dog with the older generation.

I'm in my twenties, so it's not just an older generation thing that think Rex is a dog's name.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 Sorry that you have heard 1 or 2 dogs called Rex, about 500 years ago and still cant shake the past...! Time to get into the 21st century.

If you're calling your kid Rex, you may as well go the whole hog and call him Fido.

No, and I've never met a dog called Rover or a cat called Tiddles but they are almost 'shorthand' for cat and dog names.

Have you ever met a Joe Bloggs or a Jane Doe? Nope, but they are 'generic' people names in the same way that Rover and Rex are generic dog names.

I do quite like it as a name though.

So WhatToDoAboutThis2017 who so bizarrely said its actually "cruel" (??!) to call a little boy this lovely name. Just out of interest looked up past comments on names she likes- She likes: Jane, Kai and... "MACY MAY"!! But thinks calling a boy Rex, is cruel...

I like it but it is the name of the creepy annoying ventriloquists puppet thing in Victorious (Nickelodeon kids show).

I truly pity those who say "its a dogs name" are people who just can’t shake old fashioned associations that belong firmly in the first part of the 19th century.As sealsong so rightly points out, other dogs names are Sm, Ben but who says these are “dogs names”. people choose to call their dogs 100000s of names. Humans choose to call their children 10000s of different names. Most names are used by dogs, cats and humans. A small handful are called Rex. I’ve never heard of a dog called Rex, have you really?
The people who say this are the same people who like dull, plain, run of the mill, heard everyone names- does their outdated opinion matter to you? Dare to be a little different, it really won’t hurt. Rex is an awesome name.

I met a lovely little Rex recently. Initially I was taken aback and though "dogs name" but actually I have literally never met a dog called Rex (or Fido or Spot). I thinks that's a fairly outdated conception which persists. As mentioned above, there are a ton of dogs called Oscar, Bella etc.

On reflection I actually decided that Rex was a pretty cool name, and T-Rex would be an awesome nickname!

As an aside, I love Felix too (although I can accept the cat connection there as the brand of food it well known)

My nephew Rex is a confident young man who has never been teased for his name. He loves his name.

Floggingmolly but that's with bella the most popular dogs name or milly. Every little girl seems to be called bella of milly as is every little dog. I never hear a dog rex nowadays.

It absolutely is a dog's name. Imagine calling to your child in the playground and having several terriers come running...

I think it's true what marshallzumarubble said. Rex is more associated to a dog with the older generation. Nowadays dogs names seem to be milly, bella, lola etc. Which no one sees as a big deal. So I guess even less so for rex.

I have one too! I love it, it suits him. If he met a dog called Rex he'd think it was cool.

I have a Rex. He is nearly 5. We have only ever had positive comments on his name (well we had one woman say it was a dog's name but she has a son called Tyson 'after the boxer' so I think we probably differ majorly in our taste in names anyway! Oh and my Grandad said it was a cowboy's name...).

He started school last year and a lot of boys in his class and the years above have said it is a really cool name (I am guessing because of the dinosaur) and we went to a 13 year old's birthday the other day and had a lot of comments that it is cool because 'it has an x in it'.

I think the dog thing doesn't occur to the younger generations and, as a PP said, in the UK anyway dogs called Ben, Sam and Lola are much more common.
