Family member has new baby called Rex. I'd never considered the name before and wondered what most thought. I liked Rex Harrison way back but my little grandson said'Oh like Tyrannosaurus Rex?"

I don't get the comments about calling out "Rex!" in the park and getting dogs run over to you.

If someone were shouting "Molly!" Or "Macey!" in the park, they may also get dogs recalling to them.

Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Love it and had it on our short list twice, would have used it but have all girls. But now I'm thinking a girl called Rex would be rather cool - I could have still used it! Kicks self.

I have now met baby Rex and he is absolutely adorable.
Family dogs include an Oscar and a Jack...

Ds1 has a boy in his class called Rex , whose sister is called Jess (Jessica) and I know a number of boys called Sam. Also my cousin's son is Felix. There's also a Bella in ds1's class. I don't associate any of those names with animals (except maybe Felix).

Rhubarbtart9 · 16/07/2017 20:15

Adore it

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 16/07/2017 13:09

This thread has restored my faith in Mumsnet! Almost all kind comments!

LetZygonsbeZygones · 16/07/2017 12:34

I like it. And I don't buy the dog name argument (apart from Fido ) as I know puppies/dogs with the following very human sounding monikers - Hugo,, Archie, Sophie, Ryan, Betty and Henry.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 03:06

It absolutely is a dog's name. Imagine calling to your child in the playground and having several terriers come running...

All the dogs' names I hear bellowed are Max, Poppy, and Charlie.

Should parents of human Maxs, Poppys, and Charlies care?

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 02:58

Just out of interest looked up past comments on names she likes- She likes: Jane, Kai and... "MACY MAY"!! But thinks calling a boy Rex, is cruel...

Oh that is most amusing! Grin

Macy May! God help that child.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 02:55

Rex is a dog's name and very cruel to call a child it.

Oh dear, you must be confused. No one is suggesting she call the child 'It'.

But if by chance you mean it's cruel to call a child Rex......well I suggest you dial down the hysterics. It's not Adolf, it's not Assad, it's a name that's been borne by men for centuries.

Calm down.

huskyduck · 15/07/2017 02:51

I love it 😍 it's on our shortlist.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/07/2017 02:45

LOVE THIS NAME

TurquoiseOwl · 15/07/2017 02:04

I don't like it, but I do prefer it to some dull names: James, Thomas, etc.

nowyersuckindiesel · 14/07/2017 20:06

Love Rex. Very cool name.

Sallywiththegoodhurr · 14/07/2017 19:36

OP I absolutely love the name Rex. If this baby is a boy then it will be his name!

Huffletuff · 14/07/2017 19:32

I actually know 6 dogs called Kai.

meettherussians · 14/07/2017 09:57

I think its 1 thing giving honest options on a name where OP has just asked for future baby,. Yet another when several people on the thread then say this is their young daughter/sons name, and people still come on and say the name is “horrible”. I actually think that makes you pretty horrid actually.
Another case in point- quick look up of SuperBeagle past name comments- she like: “Lindsay for a boy. Also like Joss.” And also likes:Lucy, John and Peter.
So safe to say very different type of person to someone cool enough to call their kid a slightly different (oh no! how dare anyone want to stand apart from the crowd and not conform/blend in in every way!) , yet still traditional (been around for 200 years) name like Rex.

WanderingTrolley1 · 14/07/2017 03:30

"Rrrrahhhh! Were you scared?"

SuperBeagle · 14/07/2017 02:55

I just think it's a horrid name, for a dog or for a child.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 14/07/2017 01:11

First thing I thought of was "T" ! Then the dog. Sorry!

Buntysoven · 14/07/2017 01:08

Rex is a brilliant name. My aunt has a boarding kennels and I have never met a Rex there. Maya Huey Lydia Bella Oscar Archie Alfie Charlie yes but not 1 Rex.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 18:05

Ignore WhatToDoAboutThis2017 and the cruel comment. Probably done just for a reaction as usual.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 18:01

Rex is lovely.

Skyatnight4 · 13/07/2017 16:24

Scattymere I don't think anyone "insisted" it's a dogs name. Just that they think dog when they hear it as in the past it was a known as a dogs name. So it's not so shocking that people would have that association with the name. Like I said above its a perfectly nice normal name and not everyone has that association nowadays.

overmydeadbody · 13/07/2017 16:23

I think it's a lovely name. I know two, one adult and one teen and they both suit the name perfectly and have never had issues with it.
