Hi, my husband and I are expecting our first baby girl and are stuck for a name. We seem fixated on one but celebs knabbed it which means it's not out but a dampner iyswim. We are both alternative so would love a dark name that's beautiful. Surname is spelt differently but same as Kirstie from location.

So far we have

Luna Fae (fairy in French)
Luna Celeste
Serephina

Undecided on Tabitha (is it cats name?), Willow (what if they are not svelte? Like naming a weedy boy Thor iyswim).

Love but can't have Lily or Violet (already in use), Persephone (too close to mine by sound) and Wednesday is bit try too hard but could be a middle name if she's born on a Wednesday ;-)

All ears if anyone has any ideas. Don't mind more out there names/ spiritual/ natural or unisex names.

Finally a name thread that has my dd's name on it! 😁

Romulan it's so sad when a name is "demonised" isn't it?

Please don't name your child Lilith, aka the child snatching demon
Only if you believe the 'demonisation' that later religions imposed on their conquered cultures. Here's another definition of Lilith www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Lilith

Why would anyone name a child Morwenna?
Maybe they watch Poldark and like the character.

The OP asked for dark and delicious names and when looking for meanings, it's educational to investigate the origins if it's seen nowadays as a mythological character like a triple goddess, as opposed to the conquering civilisation's vilification of the conquered peoples' beliefs.
Cultures who did not have written records were not exactly accurately documented by their conquerors, they were generally portrayed as superstitious verging on "evil" who needed to be shown the error of their ways by adopting the conquering society's values.

Amber
Mary (as in Shelley)
Matilda (comes up a lot in Gothic novels)
Zara

Thanks some lovely names here, a few a little too niche but others we had not come across and most people being helpful.

Regarding the others personal taste is just that, not your taste fair enough. That's why I usually don't partake in other threads on the baby names as I doubt you would want our opinion!

Few bits Fae was on a baby name site as french fairy so hmmm spelling could be issue. And gutted about the hp thing with Luna liked it for years :-(

I'm going to go through the suggestions with my Husband later, we are looking for one which is lovely with a hint of the dark but suitable for any little lady and what they want to be.

Due October so a little dark is to be expected! Be back later with a list we both like.

Why would anyone name a child Morwenna? My mother considered it when having me. It is a vile name. Mor is associated with death FFS! Why would you look at a beautiful newborn and saddle then with such a horrible name? I don't get it.

When you choose an unusual name, do look up the meaning first.

Lilith
Tanith
Morgaine/Morgause/Morgana/Morrigan
Iseult/Isolde
Valerian
Astrid/Astrild
Freya
Etoile
The Goddess Chant of Isis Astarte Diana Hecate Demeter Kali Inanna, might give you some inspiration although Isis as a name with current connotations isn't likely to be anyone's choice Sad

How about:

Esmeralda
Celestia
Lystra
Lavana

SequinsOnEverything · 12/07/2017 10:27

Willow (what if they are not svelte?

This never occurred to me when naming dd1. I thought about willow trees being strong and flexible, but not that she'd have to be thin!

Dd2s name has been suggested a few times on this thread too, not chosen because of its meaning, but I was aware of the meaning.

Of the suggestions Briar is my favourite (other than my children's names).

OrangeSeville · 12/07/2017 10:22

I love Delilah!

OpalIridescence · 12/07/2017 10:21

My daughter's have unusual names and and can honestly say trying to make them stand out was not my motivation.
I looked at names and chose the ones I found most beautiful for my children, it was as simple as that.

alpacasandwich · 12/07/2017 10:19

Mara (Mara is a maleficent female wraith of the Scandinavian folklore, also a bad spirit in Buddhism)

Why the fuck would you name your child after that?!

OP, you might be dark and alternative but you're naming a person, not a cat or a baby. They may well grow up to be entirely conventional and want a normal name, at least one without weird connotations that pigeon holes them at best and, at worst, makes them out to be a demon.

Please consider them when doing this.
