My husband refuses to entertain this name and I admit it is somewhat bracing but at the moment I love its strong femininity.

I like it. Love Leopoldina too.

I remember reading an article in the Telegraph once about a family whose five daughters were called Antonia, Thomasina, Wilhelmina, Henrietta and Georgina. Such an amazing set of names!

I think Polly in the book Love in a Cold Climate is short for Leopoldina. Could do Apolline if you wanted a similar but slightly less out there feel?

Leo is nice but i think the longer version may be one you regret and would not ever use or as Krakentoast says compromise with DH and use it as the middle name xx

100% I would have Poldi or Dina. Dina probably.
Different but no confusion as to pronunciation.

I know an Amandine who goes by Dina. Cute!

Oh no OP it's an ugly name sorry! I like the suggestion of Leontine though and I do like Leonora.

I know a little German girl called Leopoldine. It's an old name making a comeback, like Josephine and Wilhelmine.

It grows on you, that's for sure. I initially wanted to say NO way, and yet, I started to like it as I've scrolled down the thread! Grin very Imperial/Victorian/Roman-esque.... I don't know that's especially fashionable these days.

How about Polly Leonora? Then you have some of the original name, but with a contemporary twist?

Oh it's dreadful. I'm so sorry to say that knowing it was the name of your relative op. I'm sure she was a wonderful woman in other respects, but the name is just awful to me.

I love Leonora. It's one of my favourite names. Leontine is very nice too. Nns Leo or Nora (for Leonora). The nn Poldi suggested by pp, is just horrid imho and sounds like a combination of the words mouldy and palsy.

I've heard of it it's the German feminisation of Leopold like Wilhelmine/Wilhelm. It's not everyone's cup of tea but Albertine is on the upswing in certain circles.

Mike I immediately thought of Polly Hampton. Leopoldina's a lovely name.
