Me and DH really like the name Rupert but every time we tell people, we either get the silence followed by a suggestion of another name, or people outright tell us they don't like it, and its really starting to put me off. However every time I start looking at new names, I cant find anything I like as much as Rupert... your thoughts would be greatly appreciated x

Thank you lovely lot, I think This confirms More people like it than I thought, and to just keep stum until he gets here, as Im sure people will not be so Rude as to tell me how "awful" it is once he is here and named Smilex

I like it but I like slightly pretentious names and both of my pair have them, including a bear related name ! I would just pick what you like.

It reminds me of the army slang for officers. It is posh but I like it.

I have a Rupert, we shared the name pre-birth and didn't receive any negative comments.

I was worried about people's reaction.to his name but eventually stopped caring what people might think as we love the name.

It's a lovely name, but I am biased Grin

I love the name Rupert, but DP vetoed it, along with all the other boys names I liked as being posh twat names. We only agreed on Arthur, and seeing as one of the towie lot called their ds Arthur I am now seriously questioning our taste!

I know an adult Rupert (Rupe) who is very good looking and successful and an absolute gent.

I know a little Rupert who is adorable and very cool.

I really like it. But stop telling people. Just announce the name when baby arrives and if anyone's rude enough to have a negative opinion then, tell them to do one.

Rupert is lovely. Ignore the negative comments - you like it and it's a perfectly fine name that's not going to cause him any problems; that's all that matters really.

If you're finding that people's reactions are putting you off, I'd stop sharing the name until he's born. People tend to be much politer about a name when you've already given it to your baby!

Rupert is a classic solid name that's not overused. Its easy to spell and pronounce. You love it. I can't see any problem Smile

First thought is "...the bear"

Second thought is Jilly Cooper novels.

It's not my particular taste but I don't have a massive aversion to it. I certainly wouldn't advise against using it....I think that's really rude tbh.

My DS also has a very unusual name and one school mum was direct enough to say: 'well that will take some getting used to' Grin (but then I do live in a country of rude wankers).

Rupert is a fabulous name and I don't think it is a wacko name at all. Obviously not everyone will share this view but if it is the name you love, go for it. I went for a name that many found horrendous but I adored and I love it as much now, ten years later, as I did then. And DD has made the name her own and rocks the name. I am sure your DS will make the name his own too.

Don't go for something annodine and spend the next ten years saying: 'well Terry is OK but really he should have been a Rupert' (sorry to all Terrys)Grin

I like Rupert. It makes me think of Rupert Friend. Then again, there's Rupert Mudoch.

I quite like the posts that go along the lines of "We've decided that we definitely want to call our PFB Maximilian or Howard. Which one do you prefer?"
and someone will say "Why don't you call him Sam"

We have a Rupert, the name really suits him and there are a couple in school. I only had one negative comment (from my mum who has now got used to it) otherwise I have only heard nice things. If you like it use it. No one else will mind what you call your child when they are here.

If you want to a pedant, Mike, when starting your first paragraph with 'first' then you need to start subsequent paragraphs with the relevant number as well.

First, you should have said "DH and I" not "Me and DH". Been reading Pedant Thread.

You and your DH like the name Rupert. Use it. The only thing wrong with it is that most people associate it with a bear. Teddy, Bear, Theodore and Edward are all popular names too.

If you say that you are thinking of naming your baby anything chances are you'll get a Ooh I like that or a Ugh response. If the person asks you is pregnant, they'll have the baby first and steal your name. Fact.
