Does Dashiell sound "American" to you?

Have heard this comment a few times in relation to the name Dashiell (for a boy). It seems to be meant in a negative way. What do you think?

Sounds like a brand, rather than a child's name, to me anyway.

Yes, for me it's mostly because of the American detective writer Dashiell Hammett. In fact I know someone American who named their child after him as he was their favourite author. Not a bad thing, though.

Dashiell (pronounced Dash-eel) nn Dash.

I met one in the 80's. He was lovely but also lived up to his nn when dashing around with the feather duster that he had just dipped into the coal fire

It sounds very American to me. I don't think that's necessarily a negative if you like that style of name. It's not my style but it's not a bad name. Dash is a cool nn

PratStick I'm sorry if I offended you Blush I'm not saying that I find "American" to be a bad thing, just that I've had a few people make this comment and wanted to know what people on here think.

Thanks for all the responses. It's pronounced "DASH-ul" or "DASH-eel" btw.

I think people think "American," if their introduction to the name is a film star/ Hollywood. Even though Cate Blanchett is Australian, a lot of people only heard the name through Hollywood gossip. FWIW, I like it.

Dashiell Rae is a female musician and composer.....and she's British.

Well by 'very American' I mean I think of Dashiell Hammet - a great American writer.

Similar to if you called a little girl Harper (Lee). It may not be common in the US, but it has an iconic American feel.

I've never heard this name, it doesn't sound American to me, more a yoonique name or one that you got from a TV series.

Is it pronounced Dashiell to rhyme with bell or Dashile to rhyme with bile?
