Well in that case I personally would give one middle name or none.
We had the same debate for DS (two surnames) and came to the conclusion that five names in total would be too many.
DH didn't want to give him a middle name at all but it meant a lot to me plus I gave birth dammit so he relented
To be fair his first and middle names are only one syllable each.

Whose surname will the baby have?

If the baby will have your DH's surname, which is presumably your PILs' surname too, she will already share a name with her MIL. And surnames are much more important than middle names.

So if she's just having one middle name, it should be one from your side of the family.

However, if your DH won't agree to that, what about your DM and MIL's middle names - is there a name in common somewhere?

I'm so surprised everyone is saying 2! I really don't see the point of middle names and didn't give my dc any. It's a none from me!

My DSs both have two middle names one from each family, they love it.

I have a common popular 70s 'filler' middle name which has no particular meaning apart from the fact my parents liked it. My Dad even made it into a 'younique' spelling obviously ahead of his time

I have none and turned out ok with it. But if you want the 2 go for it, just know with the double barrelled surname there's no way they will get used as it will be such a mouthful.

DS has two middles names and a double barrelled surname. We dropped an additional surname that has been used as a middle name for generations.

We don't want to go overboard on names now, do we?!

In regards to order we went for the order that didn't spell anything out!

My DS has both his Grandfathers names as middle names. We thought it the fairest solution and has been well received by both families.
DS does have a short first name though so it isn't (at least in my opinion) too much of a mouthful

I'm going to go against the grain and say none. I find my middle name completely pointless and when friends have babies the middle name is never ever mentioned again after the birth announcement.

I've two - both of my grandmothers. Nearly caused an awkward set of initials until my dad noticed and they switched the order to avoid it.

My mother was proud that I was the only grandchild to include her mother's name.

I don't have any and have never really cared. Two of my kids have two, the other two only have one.

If you like both the names, have both. If you hate one, have neither.

I've got two, I've always loved it. One benefit is that it's very unlikely that somebody else will have the same combination of four names that I do, handy for credit check purposes. I also just like it I suppose! I have one mn from my mothers side and one from my fathers.

Both my sons have two middle names as well.

My DH has no middle name and I just think his name looks unfinished somehow.

Now you have to negogiate which one goes first (and is therefore the one that will be used on forms etc - you'd be surprised how many don't take account of a second middle name)...

Fortunately, one of my nieces is already named after MIL. So dd has my mother's name and her paternal great great grand grandmother's , who was alive and able to hold her when she was tiny. Ds has his both his grandfather's names- one of which is very unusual and one of which healed a family feud.

They have always loved hearing the stories of their names...............

Unfortunately we won't have another DD. This was extremely difficult for me to fall pregnant (IVF) and we won't be having any more
