Moses or Solomon

Unfortunately my husband and I just don't like any boys' names! We're so fussy (too posh, too unusual, too common) but need one any day now

We both quite like Moses and Solomon, despite being put off by how obviously biblical they are!

Which would you choose? Or do you have any other good suggestions?

Probable middle name of Daniel (after a particular Daniel we've known)

If your DD's nn is Ol / Ollie, then I'd avoid Solomon, given that the obvious shortenings for Solomon are Sol / Solly.

Solomon would be my preference - Moses just sounds a bit too 'big' of a name for a tiny baby IYSWIM. Also - Moses baskets

I agree with @LaurieFairyCake , I don't think it'a an issue at all but I would assume the baby would be African with the name Solomon or Moses.

It's not odd The only men I know with those names are Black British Nigerians who are keen on very strong religious names. It suits them as it's a norm in the community. It sounds weird on your white British Christian because it's not usual.

If you're black fine, no if you're white. I know 2 in my church with those names, both Nigerian. They're way more religious names than Noah.

Isn't mo a way of saying 'morbidly obese'? For that reason I'd go with Solomon. If you separate Moses and Solomon then it reduces the religiousness, it's only because they are written here together that it makes it sound highly religious. If you went with Solomon I'd be just as likely assume you were African, I knew a few African's with that name.

Love Solomon. It was on our shortlist but we ended up naming DS Zachariah instead. Still love the name if we ever have another.....

The thing is though, the more popular a biblical name becomes, the less overtly religious it becomes somehow. Plus, Moses is the most important figure in the Old Testament. I agree Solomon is less overly religious for both reasons.

I just think of Gwenyth Paltrow's son when I hear Moses. I love Solomon and great nickname potential. I know a toddler called Solly which is cute.

Moses is really obviously Biblical. As in, those without a Christian upbringing will still recognise Moses. I'd avoid it.

Solomon is nowhere near as obvious. It's also infinitely nicer.

I love both names! Were both on my shortlist for DS (Rueben) and were on the shortlist again for DTs (both girls!). I also really like Sulamain with nickname Sully which is the Muslim version.

We are not a religious family at all, but I just seem to love biblical names. Similar names also on MTV shortlist were Gabriel, Elijah, Ezra and Saul.

I'm Christian so I wouldn't worry about people assuming that about me...Although I'm not a right-wing/conservative Christian so maybe I would worry about it...?!

If you're thinking Hebrew/ Hebrew derived names, how about something a little more unusual like Lior ( pronounced Lee-or) ?
