DD is almost 6 weeks - no one likes our chosen name... Haven't registered her yet! I just don't know what to do :( there are lots of threads on the name, but they always get negative replies, so I doubt they end up using it. I love it... My mum isn't keen, but she keeps telling me to use it (in all fairness, she has always said that I should go with what I love) but DP's family hate it. Everyone on here hates it and say that they judge people with that name, so it puts me off. Grace would be the middle name and it's just unfortunate that it's now classed as a filler middle name (I've always loved Grace) but DP doesn't like it, so he agreed to have it for the middle. I suppose it just makes it even worse as it's a known middle name for the name.

I'm literally getting myself so upset over it.

It's none of their business. It's a normal name. You love it.
I was hoping for something outlandish. Tell everyone that you have listened to them and you are now calling your dd Princess Consuela Banana Hammock. Or Mistress Conchita Fluffy Shoes.
We had the same with ds1. My parents told me how my relatives thought his name was funny and they were all laughing about it. His name is normal and popular. We ignored them.

hockityponktas · 20/06/2017 17:53

Madison is a perfectly valid choice for a name. I personally really like it, others may not.
She is your child and it is no one else's business what you name her.
It's incredibly rude of them to comment negatively about it unless you have explicitly asked for their opinion.

ThanksMsMay · 20/06/2017 17:49

Maddison is completely normal isn't it? I'd have no preconceived notions about that name.

mummytobemaybe · 20/06/2017 16:33

Madison is lovely

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/06/2017 15:53

Apple

Common was what people used to say before "chavvy" fell into regular use.

FartnissEverbeans · 20/06/2017 14:59

Madison Grace is a lovely name.

Lots of nice names get slated on Mumsnet. Ignore the threads

AppleSmoothie · 20/06/2017 12:43

What does common mean?

Thanks everyone! Madeleine isn't an option, we pronounce it differently and don't like it as much.

I think if you love it you should use it and learn a lesson never to tell anyone before you announce it officially.

Personally I like Maddie but don't like Madison. To me it sounds common (and not in a popular way) but you love it and yours is the only opinions that matters.

CadnoDrwg · 20/06/2017 11:52

AppleSmoothie I was fully expecting you to admit the name you liked was some horrible contrivance of mis-spelt names or 'meaningful' words spelt backwards or even a place.

Madison is a beautiful name and Grace really suits as a middle name.

It is not a name that will embarrass her when she's an adult and if she so desires can use Madi as a shortened version.

Make the appointment and go and register your daughter's name that you like. People that don't like it will have to get used to it.

My mother didn't like the name I gave my eldest...now she denies ever having criticised my choice Grin

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/06/2017 11:23

Go and register her Op. madison is lovely. And if no one else likes it, tough. As long as you and dh chose it, it's fine.

MikeUniformMike · 20/06/2017 11:22

I think it will sound dated in a few years and Madeleine is nicer. It's your baby and if you want to call her Madison, then call her Madison. I prefer the Madison spelling not Maddison.

I think Madeleine Grace is a pretty combination.

MacarenaFerreiro · 20/06/2017 11:14

OP I'm going to be harsh. You've been warned.

You are NEVER going to get unanimous agreement on a name. Putting names out there in public and asking what people think is going to get you a range of opinions. You have dithered and farted around for almost 6 weeks asking the entire family what they think of your name when in fact it has nothing to do with them - it's YOUR baby and YOUR choice.

Lesson learned for next time - keep your thoughts between you and your partner, decide on a name and annouce it. No debate, no consultation, no dithering.

Now get down to the register office and get that baby registered.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/06/2017 11:06

Oh OP you sound really upset Sad

Madison wouldn't be my choice. But hell we are not all the same and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. I think it goes really well with Grace too. My DDs' names are always mocked on here as being boring but I still love them.

Congrats on your baby OP and call her what you and your OH want Thanks

Bvt · 20/06/2017 11:04

I have a Madison and a Grace and love both names! If you like it use it who cares what other people think they have either (a) had their own children and named them as they pleased or (b) will have their own children and named them what they want.

Sharknado · 20/06/2017 10:59

Madison Grace is a lovely name OP.

Regarding the PIL's dislike they really will get over it. I'm Scottish and DH and family from SE England. They created a huge fuss about DS2's VERY Scottish name and now they love it because they love him. The name suits him and MIL even admitted to me she can't imagine him being called anything else.

Your Pil's will grow to love Madison as a name because they will love your DD. Smile

StormTreader · 20/06/2017 10:56

I think it sounds lovely :)

PoohBearsHole · 20/06/2017 10:52

So have you registered her yet? Do it this week!!!!!

Decaffstilltastesweird · 20/06/2017 10:39

What the devil is wrong with Madison?

I honestly think some family members will always be negative about your chosen name if you give them the chance. I think they forget who gets to name the new family member. Tell them you don't want any more opinions as it isn't up for discussion. That's her name - job done!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 20/06/2017 10:28

Madison is fine. I thought you were going to say it was something like Lexee-Mai.

sproutish · 20/06/2017 10:24

Madison is lovely! One of my best friends is a Maddie (Madison at work though) so I may be slightly biased. It's a good name for all ages as well, not a "baby" name that won't suit an adult/teen, or an "adult" name that won't suit a baby/child. Plus, if you like it then who cares what others think!

alltouchedout · 20/06/2017 10:21

If you like it and her dad likes it and you feel it suits her, use it. What does it matter what other people think of it?

Pibplob · 20/06/2017 10:20

It's a lovely name. Use it. You will regret it if you don't! It's not like you've named her something that's a made up name which is what I was expecting you to say. Nothing wrong with madison!

MajesticWhine · 20/06/2017 10:17

Madison is a lovely name. I'm sure your baby is gorgeous and it suits her well. It may not be everyone's taste, but it's not one of those names to attract very strong opinions.

Clalpolly · 20/06/2017 10:17

Not a HATE name. Not my choice but not so dreadful that I would spurn her and judge her. Not sure what such a name might be now I think about it.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/06/2017 10:12

My daughter's name is Maddison. I love it, think it's a beautiful name. Screw what anyone else thinks Smile
