We absolutely love a name that's seen as 'chavvy' would it be wrong of us to 'saddle' our child with it?

Aidan is neither new nor chavvy Hmm

Jayden, Kayden etc on the other hand...

I knew a few Haydns growing up. It was always pronounced as Hayden is today. I've never seen it as a surname.
I like Haydn. Hayden much less so. But then I can't stand Jayden, Kayden etc..

As others have said, it gets unfairly lumped with jaiden and caiden. I would say it's a proper name. Can you give us any clues on your surname?

To me, Hayden is a Welsh name, and not chavvy. I think people are put off because it sounds like one of the Jayden, Caiden, Aidan type names which are new-ish and/or popular.

I wouldn't think anything negative about the name Hayden. If you like it then go for it, don't worry about what people now might think about it.

Makes me think of Hayden White, postmodernist literary critic and philosopher of history. I don't associate it with "chavvy" at all.

Hayden is fine. There were two born in my wider friendship group around the time DS1 was born 20 years ago and people used to comment on it being "posh" 😁.

I do think it's lumped in a bit with Jayden/Kayden/Aiden nowadays which probably are a bit "chavvy".

At the end of the day though it doesn't matter what other people think - if you & DP like the name then you should use it.

I've always thought of Hayden as a posh name. I think there is a shift against it because it rhymes with Jayden.

@BuzzKillington of course there are people with those as first names. However, Haydn is definitely normally the surname version and pronounced differently.

Aiden is an alternative spelling.

....and we have a friend (45) who is Haydn (he's a kiwi).

@BuzzKillington that made me laugh. You put a sentence about Hayden should be spelt (Hayden is clearly more known as a first name and Haydn as a surname and pronounced differently!) and then went ahead and spelt Aidan 'incorrectly' Grin

Hayden is fine imo. Wouldn't pick it but it stays on the right side of the line imo. I was told Gemma was chavvy and I disagree, Ithink it's a beautiful Italian name. I don't understand how Emma is considered ok but Gemma is not. Some of these judgments are so illogical.

I like it and don't think it's jayden & kaden esqe despite rhyming.
I think of it as an Aussie/Kiwi name although have no idea of its actual heritage

Haydn (as it should be spelt imo) is an OK name, but because it rhymes with the much hated Jayden/Caden/Kayden, it tends to get lumped together as a 'chav' name, as Aiden does now too.

Hayden is ok I thought you were going to say wayne, shane or dwayne.
I would think about my childs future job, I don't see many dwaynes in senior management.

I hate it when people describe a name as 'chavvy', it's a really offensive term.

There's nothing wrong with Hayden, it's a perfectly normal surname that is sometimes used as a first name.

Not keen on surnames as first names and I wouldn't describe Hayden as chavvy
I think one of the problem I have with Hayden is what it would be shortened to 'Hay' or 'Den' or 'Denny'. Do you have any views? Remember once your child gets to school its all bets off on what friends will call him / her

If you think that there could be negative connotations to a name then I'm not sure why you'd choose it really. Why not pick one that you're happy with all on levels?

according to Mumsnet my DS has a chavvy name as it's double barrelled and my daughters is too (she's due next month) but I like them so I don't really mind and makes them a bit more unusual i

Hayden is nice OP and if you like it then use it :)

What does 'chavvy' even mean? I know people on here think it, so don't need that confirmed! Just wondering if it's evil of me.

It depends. Mumsnet has a really judgmental line and I don't think people in rl are that aware of names.

I don't get the Hayden bashing. I like it. Go for it op, who cares what others think. There's one at dds nursery and he's adorable
